"I wouldn't say I'm dropping out any second, but I would say it's probably not too far away," said Depp. "When you add up the amount of dialogue that you say per year and you realise that you've said written words more than you've had a chance to say your own words, you start thinking about that as an insane option for a human being."

Depp – a three-time Academy Award nominee for Best Actor – began as a teen idol in the 1980s TV series 21 Jump Street. He would go on to become one of the more recognizable faces in film, building a resume that included understated roles in such films as Cry Baby and Benny & Joon. However, it would be his collaborations with director Tim Burton that really put him on the map. Depp became a hot property after his appearances in such films as Edward Scissorhands, Ed Wood and Sleepy Hollow. Ultimately, Depp would become one of the biggest box office draws in Hollywood after the success of the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise and Tim Burton's 3D marvel, Alice in Wonderland.

However, Depp has fallen on some rough times at the box office. His most recent film, a big-budget adaptation of The Lone Ranger in which the actor stars as Tonto, has flopped at the US box office, standing to lose studio Disney up to $150m.

Depp's comments about the acting profession are similar to those of Brad Pitt, who suggested he would leave the acting profession "in three years" during a 2011 interview with 60 Minutes. Yet Pitt, 49, isn't looking to leave the business altogether, saying he would like to look into a career as a producer.

That said, Depp still has several more films on tap before he would be able to make retirement an option. The fifth film in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise is due in 2015, while a sequel to Alice in Wonderland is expected to include an appearance by Depp's Mad Hatter. The actor has also signed on to play the title role in Mortdecai, a "comic crime thriller about a dashing and unscrupulous art dealer" which will co-star Gwyneth Paltrow and Ewan McGregor.
