Joaquin Phoenix Rumored for Marvel's 'Doctor Strange'

San Diego Comic-Con is well underway, which means tons of news on upcoming comic book movies. Case in point: Joaquin Phoenix is in talks to join the Marvel Cinematic Universe in the upcoming big screen version of Doctor Strange, to be directed by Scott Derrickson (Sinister).

Phoenix "has had discussions" to play the lead role, although a deal is not yet in place. However, it is reported that Phoenix has "been mentioned most often" for the role and is "in consideration," going as far as to cite that his brief consideration to play Lex Luthor in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice means he wouldn't dismiss a superhero franchise role altogether.

Doctor Strange has been in the works for the better part of forever, as Marvel tried to figure out how best to bring the character to the big screen. The story centers on a surgeon who damages his hands in a car accident and joins the occult in a desperate attempt to heal himself. In the process, he rises to the status of the universe's "Sorcerer Supreme," which would sound ridiculous in just about any other context outside that which has been established by the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Johnny Depp had been previously rumored for the role, but Phoenix might actually be a better fit, with his frenetic energy and hints of danger and unpredictability. This could be one of the more unique Marvel movies in some time, if it's able to match the uncommon nature of its source material.
