Could Joaquin Phoenix be headed for big-screen villainy?

Joaquin Phoenix, who is getting Oscar buzz for his role in the Warner Bros. movie Her, could be working with the studio again on the upcoming Man of Steel sequel, which is rumored to be a Batman vs. Superman film.

Reportedly, the studio wants the Oscar-nominated actor for a role in the film, and while it's not clear what that role is just yet, it's rumored to be the role of Lex Luthor. It’s still very early in the casting process, so a formal offer has not been made as of yet. And even if an offer is made, there's no guarantee Phoenix would take it, since he's reportedly weighing an offer on Gus Van Sant's upcoming film Sea of Trees.

Neither Warner Bros. nor Phoenix's reps would comment on the story.

The Zack Snyder-directed Man of Steel sequel opens July 17, 2015, and stars Henry Cavill as Superman, Ben Affleck as Batman, Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman and Amy Adams as Lois Lane.
