Jimmy Carter Announces He Has Cancer

Former U.S. President Jimmy Carter revealed on Wednesday that he has cancer. The disease was discovered after he had surgery to remove a small mass in his liver on Aug. 3.

He posted a statement on his website on Wednesday:

Statement from Former U.S. President Jimmy Carter Recent liver surgery revealed that I have cancer that now is in other parts of my body. I will be rearranging my schedule as necessary so I can undergo treatment by physicians at Emory Healthcare. A more complete public statement will be made when facts are known, possibly next week.

Carter is 90 years old.
