Academy Award winner Jane Fonda has been named the recipient of the American Film Institute’s 42nd AFI Life Achievement Award, to be presented on June 5 in Los Angeles during a high-profile tribute to be aired on TNT and Turner Classic Movies, The Hollywood Reporter confirms.
The choice to honor Fonda marks a significant milestone in AFI history, as the organization previously honored the star's father, Henry Fonda. This makes the Fondas the first father-daughter duo to receive the honor.
Jane Fonda, most recently seen on TV in HBO's The Newsroom and on the big-screen in Lee Daniels' The Butler, is a two-time Oscar winner, for 1971’s Klute and 1978’s Coming Home.
AFI board chairman Howard Stringer, while announcing the choice to honor Fonda, was effusive in his praise of the star: "Jane Fonda is American film royalty. A bright light first introduced to the world as the daughter of Henry Fonda, the world watched as she found her own voice and forged her own path as an actor and a cultural icon. Today she stands tall among the giants of American film."
The American Film Institute's Life Achievement Ceremony honoring Jane Fonda will air in 2014.
