James Van Der Beek Joins 'CSI: Cyber'
James Van Der Beek has appeared in three comedy series within the last year, all three of which are no longer on the air: ABC's Don't Trust the B-- in Apt. 23, and CBS shows Friends With Better Lives and How I Met Your Mother. However, Van Der Beek is now finally heading back to drama, at long last: the former Dawson's Creek star has joined the cast of CSI: Cyber.
Van Der Beek will play FBI Agent Elijah Mundo on the third spinoff of the CSI franchise after CSI: Miami and CSI: NY. Mundo is described as “an expert in battlefield forensics recruited by Special Agent Avery Ryan (series star Patricia Arquette) for his war efforts in Afghanistan. Mundo is a savant when it comes to weaponry, vehicles and bombs. A self-proclaimed action junkie, Agent Mundo will often put himself at risk to seek permanent justice, while Ryan will level his diehard behavior with her expertise in psychology. Together, they will team up to fight the world’s toughest cyber crimes.”
While the show doesn't debut until midseason, the hype is already building for the spinoff, which has cast Emmy winner Peter MacNicol as a member of the eclectic team. I'm not sure if CBS is trying to build this as a team of deceptively quirky weirdos, but I kind of admire them if that's the direction they're headed -- almost to the point of actually looking forward to the show. And that's more than I've been able to say about a procedural in a long time.
