James Corden Officially Announced as 'Late Late Show' Replacement
After a month of rumors (and, frankly, it feels like a lot longer than a month since the news first broke), CBS has finally confirmed that British actor James Corden will replace Craig Ferguson as host of The Late Late Show.
“James Corden is a rare entertainment force who combines irresistible charm, warmth and originality with a diverse range of creative instincts and performance talent,” said Nina Tassler, Chairman of CBS Entertainment, in a statement. “He is the ultimate multi-hyphenate – a writer, creator and performer who is loved and respected in every medium he touches, including theater, comedy, music, film and television. James is already a big star in the UK and he’s wowed American audiences on Broadway; we’re very excited to introduce his considerable and very unique talents to our network television audience on a daily basis.”
Corden's reign as host of The Late Late Show will begin in 2015, although an actual starting date has not been announced just yet. Also yet to be announced are all of the details behind Corden's take on the show, from creative elements to production staff and location.
“I can’t describe how thrilled and honoured I am to be taking over from the brilliant Craig Ferguson,” said Corden, in a statement. “To be asked to host such a prestigious show on America’s #1 network is hugely exciting. I can’t wait to get started, and will do my very best to make a show America will enjoy.”
Corden is no stranger to television, as he's one of the stars and co-creators behind the successful U.K. sitcom Gavin & Stacey, for which he won a BAFTA Television Award for Best Comedy Performance. Corden also is no newcomer to performing in front of live audiences, as he earned a 2012 Tony Award for Best Actor in a Play for his performance in the comedy One Man, Two Guvnors. The actor even has a burgeoning film career. Not only has he played inaugural Britain's Got Talent winner Paul Potts in the film One Chance, he also starred opposite Keira Knightley and Mark Ruffalo in this summer's indie hit Begin Again. This holiday season, Corden will star alongside Meryl Streep and Johnny Depp in Disney's highly-anticipated adaptation of Into the Woods.
At just 36 years of age, Corden has the potential to have a long, healthy run on late night TV. Considering how talented he is, he also has potential to not just have longevity, but also success. Corden is a solid choice to succeed Craig Ferguson, who has brought his own unique brand of manic energy and off-the-wall humor to The Late Late Show hosting gig. Ferguson's will be big shoes to fill, but Corden seems more than up to the task.
