Jack Walton sings 'Straight Up' on The X Factor UK 2014 (VIDEO)

Jack Walton sang 'Straight Up' on The X Factor UK 2014 Live Show 2 on October 18, 2014.

Pre-performance: Jack was born in 1996, so he doesn't know a whole lot about 80s music. He's given "Straight Up" by Paula Abdul, and Jack admits he's never heard the song before. But Mel B encourages him over Skype, after joking that Jack was born the same year The Spice Girls had their first number one single. Man, now I feel old.

Nick's Thoughts: I love Jack's tone, and I loved this arrangement, but I thought Jack's actual vocal was all over the place. He played the guitar for the first half before slinging it behind his back and taking a walk around the stage, and while I like that he's already mixing it up (getting away from standing stationary with the guitar for every performance), I wish it had been a better vocal. That said, I still love Jack and think he's a terrific contestant.

Judges: Louis calls it a brilliant way to kick off the show, and adds that Paula would have loved that version of the song. Cheryl feels Jack and Mel B have a real connection that allows them to produce really interesting arrangements. Simon criticizes Mel B, however, for not actually being there for his mentoring session, instead phoning in by Skype. Simon didn't think Jack delivered his best vocal, but felt this week was better than last week. He adds that Jack is one of his favorite contestants in the competition. Mel B says Simon jealously wants Jack in his category, and praises the vocal. "Bloody well-done!" Well, if it's well-done, it probably shouldn't be bloody. [/meathumor]
