"In the Heights" Lottery Update - 06/21/08

Pigeon Bryant Park

Status: Fail

There are 2 ticket lotteries for "In the Heights" on Saturday, one at 12 Noon and another at the usual time of 6 PM. I woke up groggy at about 10 AM, got myself ready, and headed over to Times Square at about 11:30 -- I know I was cutting it close as usual. About 3 blocks away from the theater however, there seemed to be some sort of traffic jam (I actually took a cab because I suck), and I missed the lottery. Upon closer investigation, it turns out there was this unknown parade called the "Multi-Cultural Parade" on 6th Avenue today. The parade are for those countries whose populations are not big enough in the city (or for some other reason) that they don't have their own parade. Since I was there already, I took some pictures. Might as well make myself useful.

Of course what interested me was the fire engine that attempted to disrupt the parade route because the FDNY just had to have their way even if they were just going back to their station. Also, the bored NYPD officer directing pedestrian traffic who was asked a gazillion times what was happening. My favorite moment: A lady tourist got so irate after the officer told her what the parade was all about -- because "it wasn't in the book". Heh. Why so angry lady? It's just a parade.

Unfortunately, the parade was a bit of a dud. It started off with Albania, which was kinda interesting with all the young people -- but then it was downhill from there. Country after country walked by with marchers bored out of their minds. When it got a bit too hot for my comfort, I left -- and headed for the airconditioned halls of the Main Library.

Will try the lottery again in a couple of hours.
