Michael Slezak, TVLine.com's resident American Idol expert, is back with season 6 finalist Melinda Doolittle for an all-new episode of Idology!
This week, the hosts discuss whether Angie Miller can be defeated as the finale draws closer. Melinda also gives some behind-the-scenes insight about why Angie's hit-or-miss performance of "Someone to Watch Over Me" might not have been entirely her fault. Michael and Melinda also disagree on Harry Connick, Jr.'s mentoring, in addition to discussing Candice's stellar week, and Kree's chances of cracking the top 2. It's a fun episode as always, so check it out below via TVLine.com:
Thoughts:
I share Melinda's hopes that the girls head out there on Wednesday and make it truly hard for America. This really does have the potential to be the closest top 3 in the history of the show (although it'll be hard to top season 5's results, in which the top 3 were separated by mere tenths of a percentage point). Kree is the clear underdog in this scenario, but I see no reason she couldn't surprise people and slip into the finale. And there's also no reason Angie couldn't end up stumbling just before the finish line. The finale is far from set in stone: Melinda Doolittle herself will probably tell you that making it to the top 3 without ever having been in the bottom 2 doesn't matter much. You still need the votes, and you still need to deliver on performance night.
That said, it'll be interesting to see what, if any, agenda the producers have on Wednesday. On Friday, the theme was changed from Judges' Choice/Jimmy's Choice/Free Choice to Judges' Choice/Free Choice/PRODUCERS' CHOICE, and all you need to do is ask Syesha Mercado how that latter addition to the theme could spell doom for one's finale chances. I really hope the song choices are fairly distributed, since I think this top 3 is talented to such an extent that the producers should just let the chips fall where they will. They're already getting a female winner. No sense in producers continuing to turn people off to the show by overplaying their hand. Although the manipulation is simply one reason in a tapestry of issues that this season has had, which is why it's a minor miracle that we've wound up with a top 3 as uniformly solid as this.
