Homeland - Season 2 Episode 5 - Recap - Q & A
Here’s the recap for Season 2 Episode 5 of Homeland: "Q & A " on SHOWTIME.
With the way last week ended, this week's episode promised to be a rollercoaster ride. The episode began with Carrie Mathison (Claire Daines) pacing back and forth outside of the CIA makeshift surveillance room. David Estes, head of the CIA, comes in to get an update on what went on in Room 416 of Nicholas Brody's (Damian Lewis) hotel.
They send Peter, the newest CIA team member, in to interrogate Brody and find out what exactly his role is in Abu Nazir's terrorist plot against America.
"Who is Issa?"- Peter
"Issa was one of my guards, I told Carrie that already."- Brody
Peter brings up Issa and talks to Brody about Issa being Nazir's son who died during his captivity. He then pushes further telling Brody his logic on what happened the day Elizabeth Gains was assassinated. Peter then leaves Brody to watch his video admitting his role in the events that took place on that day. He explains why he was involved and why he planned on killing America's head political figures by detonating a bomb.
Brody is left alone to watch the video and after he is able to think about what he wants to say, Peter comes back to interrogate him even more. Brody admits that Issa was his student that was killed during a drone strike ordered by the Vice President of the US. He says he was never wearing a bomb that day and a tape is not enough evidence to do anything with. Peter presses the matter further by bringing up Brody's wife, Jessica, and his kids, Dana and Chris.
Things get heated and Peter takes it too far by stabbing a knife STRAIGHT THROUGH BRODY'S HAND! Carrie and Saul rush in, have Peter escorted out and give Brody the medical attention he needs. Peter screams out, "THIS IS MY INTERROGATION!", as he is taken out of the room.
Carrie tells Saul she is going to stay and she can interrogate Brody. As they talk, Carrie wants to know if he felt ANY sense of remorse for sending her to the loony bin. It's difficult to tell the approach Carrie is using, as she gives Brody water and turns off each camera in the interrogation room one at a time. She proceeds to remove Brody's handcuffs to make him feel more comfortable.
Brody at his interrogation
Brody continues his story of NEVER having a bomb. It seems Carrie has gotten her touch back and is successful in gaining Brody's trust. She convinces him of Nazir's terrible ways and how he preys on innocent people.
"He (Abu Nazir) gave you a boy to love and then the other monster, Walden, took that boy away."- Carrie
Carrie tells Brody it feels good to be honest. She confesses her love for Brody and her wish that he would leave his wife and come with her. She tells him he is a good man and knows that Dana called him while in the panic room, talking him out of fulfilling the deed (detonating the bomb).
Carrie will stop at NOTHING to get what she wants ( a solid admission from Brody). She uses her play on emotions to get through to Brody and find out Nazir's next attack. Brody finally admits to Carrie that Nazir has another attack planned for America. Brody tells Carrie a lot of information about who he knows works with Nazir, who gave him the bomb vest, and who might know Nazir's next move. He tells her about Roya, the news reporter, that is in Nazir's inner circle, and the interrogation ends with Saul telling Brody to call home to reassure his family that he is safe.
As Carrie and Saul uncuff Brody and escort him out of the room, he collapses to the floor into the same fetal position we saw him in back when he came home from his eight year absence. We can see here that Brody is weak, unable to keep the strong fascade he has been playing since he came back from captivity.
During the interrogation, David finds Brody's political colleague and explains to him that Brody is aiding the CIA in an investigation on the basis of national security. Brody's family and co-workers cannot suspect anything is wrong, so Estes advises him to tell everyone that he has caught the flu and will be unavailable for a few days. Estes continues saying that Brody is staying at the Ashford Hotel as he is having marital problems.
Brody's family discuss his reasons for staying at a hotel while he and Jessica work out their problems. Brody's son, Chris, does not seem convinced that the family is in a good place, but Dana reassures him that everything will be back to normal soon. Jessica keeps leaving her husband messages and finally decides to go and investigate his hotel room. She brings him soup, seeing that he is sick and she wants him to get better. The only problem is, when she gets to his room, he's not there. Jessica realizes something is not right and calls around to his office to figure it out.
Dana goes on another date with VP Walden's son. The two seem to be happy together and enjoy spending time with one another. They decide to "have some fun" by going out for a joy ride. They lose the secret service that is following them and as Dana tells him to drive faster, they hit a pedestrian with the car. Dana wants to go back and call 911, but the fact that he is the vice president's son, will ruin his life forever. They leave the woman without helping in hopes that a car that stopped will get her the aid she needs.
Brody is offered a deal from the CIA. He can go to trial or go back into the world as if nothing happened and help the CIA find out what Nazir plans to do next. Brody and Mathison make a deal to work together and Brody is dropped off at home to go back to his "normal life." Jessica questions Brody and he tells her that he is working for the CIA on matters of national security.
We are left with Carrie at home, enjoying a glass of wine. What else would she be doing? All we ever see Carrie do at home is DRINK!
Until next week...
