Hell’s Kitchen - Season 10 Episode 9 - Recap - 11 Chefs Compete, Part 1

Last Tuesday’s episode featured some unsanitary moments from Blue Team member Royce and Red Team member Tiffany. Royce’s lobster dish contained a 12-inch strand of hair, and Tiffany chopped wellington with the same knife she used to massage her bottom lip. In tonight’s episode, we only saw a challenge and some more drama. The dinner service will take place in tomorrow’s episode. If you missed Episode 8, you can read my recap here.

Before the Challenge:

Out of sheer boredom, Kimmie wrote a rap and shared it with the other contestants. It went something like this...
We’re in Hell’s Kitchen

To prove who’s bitchin’

Started out eighteen

Down to eleven...

Challenge of the Day:

Since Chef Ramsay is opening up a brand new steak house in Las Vegas, NV, he brought a little bit of Vegas to Hell’s Kitchen. He revealed a slot machine called, “High Steaks Slot.” Ramsay called up two people at a time (one member of each team) to pull the slot handle. When the machine stopped spinning, it revealed a specific type of steak protein and four ingredients to compliment that steak protein. Ultimately, the slot machine chose the ingredients that the contestants used for this challenge.  The Slot Machine Chose:
  1. Dana vs. Patrick: Flat Iron Steak with Potatoes, Mushrooms, Spinach, Blue Cheese
  2. Christina vs. Royce: Hanger Steak with Yam, Eggplant, Asparagus, Crab
  3. Barbie vs. Brian: New York Strip Steak with Celery, Tomatoes, Cauliflower, Shrimp
  4. Tiffany vs. Justin: Fillet Mignon Steak with Beets, Carrots, Zucchini, Chorizo
  5. Robyn vs. Clemenza: Rib Eye Steak with Parsnips, Sweet Corn, Broccoli, Bacon
*** Since the Red Team had one additional member, Kimmie also cooked a Rib Eye Steak dish... her dish went up against Robyn’s.

The Red Team members are: Robyn, Tiffany, Kimmie, Barbie, Dana, Christina. Since Kimmie and Robyn went head-to-head on the Rib Eye dish, they had to decide on which dish they would present. The Red Team presented Robyn’s Rib Eye... but it turns out they made the wrong decision. Much to Chef Ramsay’s distaste: Tiffany stuffed her Fillet Mignon, Christina under-seasoned her yam, Dana poorly presented her dish, and Robyn overcooked her Rib Eye. Chef Ramsay congratulated two ladies, however. He particularly enjoyed Barbie’s shrimp and Kimmie’s Rib Eye. If they presented Kimmie’s dish instead of Robyn’s, they would have won the challenge.

The Blue Team members are: Royce, Justin, Brian, Patrick, Clemenza. Chef Ramsay also had a bone to pick with some of the Blue Team’s dishes: Royce undercooked his eggplants, Patrick put too much salt into his Flat Iron Steak, and Clemenza slightly undercooked his Rib Eye. Chef Ramsay congratulated three contestants... he liked how Clemenza’s dish tasted overall, regardless of his slightly undercooked meat; he liked Brian’s cauliflower; and he also enjoyed Justin’s fillet mignon. They won the challenge.

Result: The Blue Team won by a score of 3 to 2 steak dishes. Their reward: Shopping spree at the Sur La Table store and a delicious meal at the Comme Ca restaurant. The Red Team’s punishment for losing the challenge was to haul a carcass (half-cow) into the kitchen.

The Blue Team are now 3 for 8 in challenges. The Red Team, however, are 5 for 8.

Before the Dinner Service:

Chef Ramsay revealed it will be Steak Night.

The Red Team is on a downward spiral, to say the least. Kimmie and Robyn fell out again after they lost the challenge. They spent the better part of the episode bickering over “What If’s?”. Kimmie mentioned that the Red Team would’ve won the challenge if they presented her dish instead of Robyn’s. Robyn told Kimmie to let it go. They definitely went from best friends to public enemies. Also, Tiffany picked a fight with Barbie. Tiffany, being the drama queen that she is, labeled Barbie a “H.B.I.C. (head bitch in charge).” Behind the scenes, Barbie said, “Tiffany doesn’t care about her standards. I’m not going to let her bring us down”.... I still don’t understand why Tiffany hates Barbie so much. It could be due to a personality conflict. Then, Dana summed it up very well, “When we are in the kitchen, drop all your drama. That’s what we have to do to win tonight’s dinner service.” ... Something happened thereafter: Kimmie suffered serious grease burns to her hand and arm before hours were open. The medic told her not to go back into the kitchen.

The Blue Team seemed more pumped than usual. I am assuming they were all in good moods because of their shopping spree. Chef Ramsay gave Justin exciting news: he added Justin’s Fillet Mignon dish from the challenge to the menu.

The episode ended there. TO BE CONTINUED.....

Dinner Service takes place in tomorrow’s episode. The next episode airs Tuesday, 7/3, at 8pm ET.
