Hell’s Kitchen - Season 10 Episode 6 - Recap - 13 Chefs Compete, Part 1

Last night, four contestants were up for elimination: Barbie and Danielle (from the Red Team), Patrick and Guy (from the Blue Team). Chef Ramsay didn’t believe Barbie was the Red Team’s weakest link, so she was safe. Episode 5 ended there... with Danielle, Patrick, and Guy still left on the chopping block. Tonight’s episode begun with Guy, Patrick, and Danielle pleading their cases. Out of these three contestants, Chef Ramsay chose to eliminate Danielle.

I’m not surprised with her elimination. In my previous recap, I correctly predicted she would be the one leaving tonight. Danielle is a nice person; but, she made too many crucial errors early in the game.

If you missed Episode 5, you can read my recap and watch the elimination here:

Tonight, Royce called out Patrick for “not being a good enough leader”; then Royce tried to appoint himself as the leader of the Blue Team... but his teammates (especially Brian, Guy, and Clemenza) weren’t having any of that. They don’t think Royce is mature enough to become the Blue Crew’s next leader. Clemenza—being sick and tired of the arguments—openly expressed his feelings, “We are not going to win a challenge if we don’t act as one [unit]!”

Note: I assembled tonight’s recap a little differently since this episode only featured a challenge and some pre-dinner service drama.

Before the Challenge:

Chef Ramsay Introduced 3 Different Generations of Food

Chef Ramsay mentioned Hell’s Kitchen will be having their first ever Fashion Night! The producers definitely stepped out of their comfort zone with this idea.... it’s like a mix of Project Runway and Hell’s Kitchen. Chef Ramsay enthused, “You know that food evolves and it changes like fashion. Right?” He then brought out three models (one from the 1950’s, one from the 1970’s, and one from the 1990’s). Of course, these models got the boys (specifically Brian and Clemenza) riled up.

Models:
  • 1950’s Model: She brought out a tray filled with Jello. Blue Team members Clemenza and Brian didn’t notice the Jello at all. They only noticed her.
  • 1970’s Model: She brought out a tray filled with Fondue. Blue Team Member Patrick mentioned he hates Fondue.
  • 1990’s Model: She brought out a tray filled with Asian Fusion (i.e. Teriyaki Tuna & Wasabi Mashed Potatoes).
After the three models left the room, Chef Ramsay said to Clemenza, “Clemenza, you can put your tongue back in now. [You’re] like an antelope.” Ha ha. Chef Ramsay just won another point in my book...I’m keeping score *winks*. Love his humor. :)

Challenge of the Day:

Create a Tasting Menu for 3 Fashion Designers and Their Guests General Menu: Create a 3-Course Meal (Blue Team and Red Team must come up with their own ideas for food)
  • 1 Appetizer
  • 1 Poultry Entree
  • 1 Seafood Entree
The 3 Fashion Designers / Judges for Today’s Challenge are:

David Meister — Occupation: Fashion Designer; He is looking for food that is healthy, protein-based, spicy, and specifically Swordfish.

Amanda Che — Occupation: Swimwear Designer; She is looking for food that is not fattening.

Ina Soltani — Occupation: Fashion Designer; She is looking for food that is colorful and heavy on seasoning.

Three Fashion Designers:

The Red Team members are: Robyn, Tiffany, Kimmie, Barbie, Dana, Christina. Red Team member Dana didn’t appreciate how harsh and critical the fashion designers/judges were of the Red Team’s Tasting Menu. She said behind-the-scenes, “We get it. You don’t like to eat ever, and all you care about is your image.” She just stated the obvious. Sigh. *Earth To Dana*: They put a lot of work into their image, and their diet/food intake is specifically important to maintaining their healthy appearances. Here are two mistakes from today’s challenge: Robyn cooked Sea Bass despite Designer David’s request for Swordfish, and she also neglected to add spices to her dish even though Designer Ina asked for it; also, Tiffany completely disregarded Designer Amanda’s request for “non-fattening” food... she cooked Eggplant Fries instead. I’m shaking my head right now. I can’t believe Tiffany served processed, deep-fried food to a Swimwear Designer. Gosh. She really needs to follow directions. Robyn and Tiffany’s enormous mistakes cost them the challenge.

The Blue Team members are: Guy, Royce, Justin, Brian, Patrick, Clemenza, Roshni. The Blue Crew followed up on the three designers’ requests for Swordfish and Spices. However, they made two mistakes during the challenge: Justin’s dish looked unappealing right off the bat because he added foam to his Lobster Medallion; and, Patrick turned the judges off by stating his dish has “a touch of vinaigrette, which can thin the mucus.” Highlight of the challenge: Guy’s Swordfish entree wasn’t perfect, but it was good enough for Designers Ina and David (Designer Amanda didn’t enjoy it much). Ina and David mentioned that Guy definitely needs to work on the presentation of his dish, but he did follow their directions by adding spices to his dish... that made the Swordfish taste more vibrant. Guy’s execution paid off for the Blue Team.

Result: The Blue Team won by a score of 2 to 1 dishes. Their reward: Chef Ramsay gave them $2,000 to go on a shopping spree in Malibu. Side Notes: The Blue Crew also went wine-tasting after their Rosenthal Estate Lunch in Malibu. As part of the Red Team’s punishment, they had to transform the dining room into a fashion room by adding a catwalk (using heavy glass, low-to-the-ground tables).

The Blue Team are now 2 for 6 in challenges. The Red Team are 4 for 6.

Before the Dinner Service:

The catwalk will take place before they serve any appetizers. Then, the next part of the show will start. After they finish that segment, the Red and Blue Teams must begin dinner service. Assigned Waiters:
  • Red Team: Kimmie
  • Blue Team: Royce
The Red Team’s alliances have fallen apart. In last night’s recap, I mentioned that Robyn, Kimmie, and Tiffany have an alliance. During today’s challenge, Robyn and Kimmie partnered up for the Seafood Entree. Kimmie wanted to cook Swordfish and add spices accordingly. Robyn, however, wanted to cook Sea Bass without any spices. Kimmie felt the Red Team lost the challenge because Robyn didn’t follow the fashion designers’ directions... Kimmie didn’t want Robyn to bully her anymore, so she quit talking to Robyn.

Robyn talking about Kimmie:

Kimmie annoyed with Robyn:

The Blue Team’s leader is still Patrick, but Clemenza tried to take lead tonight. At 5:15am, he woke up his teammates so that they could all prepare for Fashion Night. Clemenza had been stressing so much about this, that he made a crucial mistake right before the start of the fashion show: he cooked scallops before Hell’s Kitchen opened its doors. Chef Ramsay yelled at Clemenza and demanded to know why he had wasted scallops before opening hours. The episode ended there. We will find out what happens to Clemenza in Monday night’s episode.

What will happen to Clemenza? Tune in next week:

TO BE CONTINUED....

Dinner Service takes place in Monday night’s episode. The next episode airs Monday, 6/25, at 8pm ET.
