HBO Renews 'Getting On' For Second Season

HBO is headed back to the hospital.

The network has renewed quirky, poignant medical comedy Getting On, starring Laurie Metcalf, Alex Borstein, Niecy Nash and Mel Rodriguez. The season two order is for six episodes, the same number as Getting On's first season. While the show has been only a moderate ratings performer, HBO execs are reportedly high on the show, and critics loved it. Adapted by Big Love creators Mark V. Olsen & Will Scheffer from the BBC series of the same name, Getting On was a show HBO had been intent on renewing, provided budget issues could be sorted out.

Of course, the downside here is that this renewal places CBS comedy pilot The McCarthys in jeopardy, as Metcalf had been cast as the female lead while the fate of Getting On remained hanging in the balance. No word if Metcalf's role will be recast, or if she'll split her time between the two shows. It might not even be an issue if The McCarthys isn't picked up to series, as there's no guarantee of a pilot earning a series order in a pilot season this packed. But one would have to think this will be a major setback, since the pilot may have to be reshot if the series actually is picked up. It's a tough situation, but hey, let's not forget the plus side: we're getting more Getting On.
