Hart of Dixie - Season 3 Episode 6 - Recap - Family Tradition

The CW's Hart of Dixie had an interesting one this week. There's some set up that seems to indicate new status quo changes for some characters, but instead, other characters undergo changes. Some expectations are subverted nicely! You'll see what I mean.

Joel and Zoe are about done with the bed and breakfast, so now they're ready to look for their own home. The first house they look at to rent is owned by a relative of Zoe's bio dad, and Zoe thinks they hate her. Joel pushes her until she goes and looks into how to contact her family. Instead of behaving like a normal person and just calling someone on the phone, Zoe decides to do a dumb thing (like usual, right?) and go crash a kid's birthday party for basically no reason. She gets there and is immediately confronted, with someone thinking she must be the entertainment. She backs out of saying who she really is and instead pretends Joel is a magician. I'm sure this won't backfire at all. And at first, everything seems to be going fine! Zoe likes her secret family, and they like her... though they do not know her real identity. She reveals herself to a cousin that had gotten along with her really well, and it goes terribly. The cousin is really mean to Zoe, basically saying Zoe is nothing to these people at all. This was a surprise ending. I expected them family to either be really mad or really mad and then really happy, but instead they were just cold in a really cruel way. I like when a TV show surprises me!

Lemon and Wade are doing really well with the Rammer Jammer, except for some friction between their staff... specifically, between Wade and the waitress... specifically, between their naked bodies in Wade's bed. Now Lemon has to find a new employee while dealing with an impending medical inspection and an offer from another business owner to take on a fancier restaurant. The catch is that Wade doesn't want to come with, so Lemon will be on her own. I wanted these two to date, but now it seems like instead they're going to be driven apart! :(

Lavon is planning a weekend away with his old NFL pals, a bachelor party for one of them. He's hesitant, but AnnaBeth mysteriously really wants him to go. He decides not to at the last minute and goes to visit AnnaBeth, where her odd behavior is revealed: Her parents are visiting! They don't like the football team Lavon played for, so Lavon is concerned. Then, they show up decked out in his gear. AnnaBeth suspects something must be up, and when the parents start hinting at marriage, nudging nudging nudging, AnnaBeth gets real mad at them and shouts. This leads to her and Lavon having a discussion about their relationship that just reinforces what we'd already known, that they're serious about one another.

There's one other plot that I don't want to mention because I hate it, but it's my job so here. George returns a book to Lyndly, but she thinks he's just making an excuse to see her. Then they do the whole will-they-won't-they nonsense for the whole episode and then they make out a little bit. Ugh. Lyndly is creepy and annoying. George Tucker is a nice enough guy, and I see what they're trying to do here, but the whole thing just seems forced. Otherwise, a good episode! Everyone had their plot either advanced or complicated in some way. I was not even expecting to have Zoe ever see her birth family again, so that plot showing up at all was a shock.
