Hart of Dixie - Season 3 Episode 4 - Recap - Help Me Make It Through The Night

The CW has us a nice little season-appropriate Hart of Dixie episode tonight. This Halloween episode is not any sort of spooktacular or frightfest, though. No worries; all the romance tension is in this one! All of it. BlueBell is gearing up for Halloween, but tensions are still running high. Lemon and Cricket don't get along after Lemon's falling out with the Belles, LaVon and Joel stubbornly refuse to be friends, and Zoe's still working as an assistant in Doctor Breeland's office.

Wade wakes up with some stranger, then encounters a human brick wall (named Randal) who is apparently the lady's boyfriend. In an effort to dodge the dude later at the Rammer Jammer, Wade heads off to help a stranded traveler. One of the waitresses at the Rammer Jammer tells Scary Dude Randal that Wade will be back later for the Halloween show (a little holiday pageant kind of thing), so Wade gets George to take him to the Mobile Masquerade Ball. At the ball, dumbo Wade sneaks off with a judge's wife for some smoochtimes. George rushes him out of there, but when the pair gets to Wade's shack, Randal is waiting. Off-screen swamplands pickup truck chase, woo! George calls Wade out on his shenanigans, but I'm not sure if Wade will really take it to heart. I suppose we'll see later this season!

Lemon isn't invited to Mobile's Halloween Masquerade Ball! She tries to get Cricket to put her on the list, but no luck. Lemon calls in the big guns: Grandma Breeland. This gets Brick drinking in the morning, but Grandma's harshness eventually gets Lemon anxious too. Regardless, Lemon gets done up good for her date with Tanner Hughes, a handsome weirdo who's obsessed with horses. He's otherwise a complete tool, and it turns out that Grandma Breeland did this on purpose to punish Lemon. At rock bottom, Lemon runs into Wade's stranded traveler and the two hit it off in a big way. After playing some mean jokes on Tanner, the two leave together, with Grandma Breeland and Tanner Hughes high and dry. The open up and really connect, then go for drinks, where they keep on flirting. There's really good chemistry here, a huge relief on a show where most of the flirting is super awkward. The night is coming to an end, but with this nameless hunk heading off to parts unknown, this could be the end. They kiss, and Lemon accepts his invitation for breakfast (hint hint). I hope this goes somewhere, but even if it doesn't, cool! I'm just glad to see the characters on this show hooking up with strangers instead of just each other in various different arrangements.

Annabeth thinks LaVon is about to propose to her on Halloween night, which makes her super anxious. She heads over to the doctor to visit Zoe for advice (and a ladyparts check-up I guess??), but during the exam, Zoe finds something abnormal up on an ovary. Some tests are called for, but Zoe assures her everything will probably be fine. Annabeth is still too anxious (what with the test result waiting period) for LaVon's potential proposal, so she enlists Zoe's help in stalling. Zoe scores some Beyoncé tickets for them, but LaVon refuses. Annabeth calls Zoe while she's at the show with Joel, and the pair rushes over. Not even terrible party games can get Joel and LaVon on the same page. Not until they discover that both of them like Game of Thrones do they stop squabbling. Annabeth gets teary-eyed at the sight of a trick-or-treating child (ovary problems could mean no kids) and the whole night dissolves. The next day, Annabeth's results come back all clear, but she finds out that LaVon's big surprise was that he got a film reel of Night of the Living Dead and they were going to watch it together on Halloween night. If I could type out sad trombone music, that's what would go right here.

This was a good episode for a few reasons. First, Lemon gets a new romantic interest and he's got no messy baggage. Also, each little story is pretty much a standalone vignette, which makes it easier to recap than a complex interlocking story like a few of this season's earlier episodes had. Also also, Jaime King's hair. Dynamite job over in the hair and makeup department for this show! Check out the preview below.
