The gang gets a rush of positivity when Penny's loving and sunny mother visits. Megan Mullally guest stars as Penny's mom who loves to break out into 90s pop songs at any given time. Penny gets a shock when her stepdad calls to inform her of their divorce. She thinks that her mother's optimism is just her version of denial and that she needs to face facts. Singing karaoke on a boat is not the best future. Penny depresses her mother and they have an epic argument in song. Penny has some pipes. They apologize and perform Torn together on the boat that's sailing away to optimism.

Dana encourages David to check out his ancestry when his sandwich truck isn't considered ethnic enough. He learns that he's part Navajo so he starts wearing turquoise jewelry and beaded jackets I used to always want as a child after watching that movie with JTT and Chevy Chase. Max works with Brad and Jane hustling tourists taking them on a fake limo tour around town. They get sick of each other and Max tells the two of them he doesn't need their improv skills. But alas.
