Grimm - Season 3 Episode 5 - Recap - El Cucuy

NBC's Grimm is back after a week off, but it's not a Thanksgiving or Hannukah themed episode. Bummer! It is an exciting episode about Mexican Boogeyman, so that's cool though. Read on!

Luchador crimers rob a gas station and beat up the attendant. As the boy's mother prays at his bedside, some monster seems real mad about it. Could this be... the eponymous El Cucuy?? Anyway, another robbery (convenience store this time) from the same mask-wearing crime doers goes off without any trouble, until after. The trouble come after in the form of our monster pal decapitating the dudes with his claws. This is when Hank and Nick get called in. I don't know why these two get called in for every case in Portland involving monster men, but it is an awfully convenient coincidence. They interview a witness who is super shifty-eyed, but they let him go for some reason. They put together that the victims were robbers and gather some witnesses from the store, but none of them saw anything. They do find out that a guy nearby has some big dogs, and the dude turns out to be Wesen. They bring him in when he volgas and attacks Nick, attempting to escape. Another attack happens while he's in custody though. Whoops! The mystery attacker was defending a woman who was being mugged, so he seems to be a nice guy at least. The woman reveals to Nick and Hank what we had already determined, with our special audience knowledge: The attacking creature is the titular El Cucuy. The bus near this attack has a camera that shows Mrs. Garcia, a witness to the convenience store robbery, debussing around where the victim did.

There's this other guy, this other plot, happening the whole episode, where this dude keeps showing up at the crime scenes. The guy is a former Marine name David Florez, the Wesen dude with the dogs from before gets a little posse together and beats the hell out of poor David. This gets David's ire up, and he runs home to vow revenge over his Marines uniform and knife. Just as he gets to the dude's house, Nick and Hank show up, Mrs. Garcia in tow. They rescue David and send the thugs back inside, but Mrs. Garcia has gone missing. She's El Cucuy, turns out, and she tears out another throat. Since arresting an old woman for these murders is ludicrous, and revealing her nature as a boogeyman is impossible, she's got to be let go. That is... an interesting twist!

After Juliette found a mysterious e-mail at the top of Nick's inbox last episode signed "Love, M", lots of explanations were needed. See, it's obviously from his mom, but Juliette was in a coma and otherwise not privvy to Grimmdom when Nick found out his mom faked her death. He tells the whole story to clue her in (and remind us, because hey, even I nearly forgot). Juliette still snoops, seeing that the e-mail from mom was sent from a place called Visnja Gora. Juliette's investigation continues past the end of the episode. In the season's other continuing plot, Analind's baby seems to be just fine and healthy, except that the doctor hears a second heartbeat on the ultrasound. Not twins, and the doctor dismisses it as an echo, but we know better than to let weird things be explained away. We'll have to wait to see what's up!

Another good week where we get something cool! I'm glad they're getting away from the boring normal Wesen stuff and into weird monsters. Here's a preview of the next episode below!
