Grimm - Season 3 Episode 4 - Recap - One Night Stand
NBC's Grimm continues its third season! And now there's mermaids! This episode specifically seems to be going out of its way to remind us of Disney's The Little Mermaid, but certainly not so much as Once Upon A Time does (since that show airs on ABC, which is owned by Disney). I don't mind it, and I do like the new mermaid lady. Maybe she'll stick around!
Some kids are hanging out in the woods, which never ends well. There's a lake and everything. They seem destined to be slashered. One of the girls has a sister who skulking around, a younger girl who is deaf and non-vocal. Her sister spots her and tells her to leave before anyone else knows she's there. Lil sis has a crush on big sis's boyfriend (she even steals his phone, the creep), so when the teens are inevitably attacked by some underwater boogieman, she's the one who saves him and guess what... she's a mermaid. Or whatever kind of wesen has webbed fingers and glowy eyes.
Nick and Hank show up as the rescued teen's house the next day to investigate. He recounts the tale, clueing us in that these girls they were with just... showed up. He takes the detectives down to the river where all this happened. Nick's super hearing picks up the little mermaid rescuer, but he loses track when the girl dives into the river. He does determine that she's magic, since she's super good at swimming. After a bit of research, she's found to be a naiad, a creature who cannot be out of the water for more than a day without dying.
They follow the stolen cellphone's signal to a house by the docks, where a middle-aged dude thwarts them. The girls from the river (Sarah and Anna) show up, but they pretend not to recognize their male companion from the previous day, which is hella suspicious. Everybody goes down the the precinct except Dad and the deaf daughter (she hid underwater). The sisters will die in capitivity, but they don't talk about what happened to the boys, Dan and Jake. Dad shows up to confess after some other wesen bully him about his daughters. He clearly didn't do it, since he doesn't know any of the details. Nick decides to use the confession as leverage against the daughters anyway.
The little sister, Ellie, shows up at Jake's house while her sisters are locked up. For reasons that are hers alone, she reveals her wesen form to Jake. The same dudes who beat up Dad show up and knock out Jake. Then they kidnap Ellie! Back in jail, Nick's gambit works. The blonde sister confesses everything. The two boys who beat up Dad and stole Ellie are betrothed to the sisters, but naiad men are sterile, so to propogate the species, they must raise the children of other men. These two guys come from a very traditional wesen family, where criminals are punished by having their finger and toe webbing cut, which is just what they've got in mind for Ellie. Luckily, the cops show up in time to beat up the fish dudes and rescue Ellie. Unluckily, Ellie accidentally got knocked out and dragged by a weight to the bottom of the river in the struggle. Nick saves her, presumably with the use of his zombie powers. After all of it, Jake asks what was up with Ellie's gills, and Nick takes the opportunity to make a joke about how everything is weird in Portland. Boooooooooo, bad joke!
Rosalee and Monroe are adjusting to living together, and they seem to be having a bit of trouble with it. There's just too much stuff! Monroe is nervous about doing anything wrong, but Rosalee assures them it'll all be fine. Nick and Juliette are glad to have everything back to normal. Renard is still tracking Analind. There was a lot of focus on the main plot this week, so all the smaller things kind of fell to the wayside. This season is young, so the beat-by-beat procedural format is still a bit surprising after the earlier episodes this season (and the last few of the second season) focused on a wide range of plots, but it's fine! It makes it easier to recap with less stuff to follow, anyway. Here's a preview of this episode!
