Grimm - Season 3 Episode 11 - Recap - The Good Soldier

Another Friday night, another episode of NBC's Grimm! Tonight, manticores! Yes, that's right, the lion/scorpion hybrids make a showing here, and that's not even the best part. There's also a great plot regarding Monroe and Rosalee, with their relationship taking a big new step towards the future...

A frightened young woman carves into the flesh of her arm with a big knife. She walks into a bar and sits down at a table with a man who does not want her there. She shows him the fresh wound (along with a host of similar scars), then throws a bloody dabbed napkin at him, and he becomes agitated, leaving. She follows him home, where he's making a phone call about the incident. He grabs a gun to intimidate her away, but she vanishes. He searches his house for her, but just finds... a manticore man! A big dude with the face of a lion and the tail of a scorpion sticks the guy with the pointy end, killing him instantly. You'll never guess which pair of Portland cops are assigned to the murder!

Nick and Hank arrive, mystified by the murder hole in the dude's chest. There's some military medals missing from the guy's home. Meanwhile, the suspicious girl shows up at the home of one of the victim's war buddies, alluding to having had a sexual and military past with him. Nick and Hank visit the VFW where the victim had been to look for clues. They find the napkin, with the bloody pattern, then it's on to the next lead. The victim, Ron, had made some calls to a security firm called McCabe, so the detectives head there for a chat with another Army buddy. Fruitless again, and then the second and third victims turn up. The first guy that the suspicious girl had visited gets a hole through his chest, too, and so does his wife. Oof. Hard way to go. Nick and Hank learn that the girl, a discharged veteran named Frankie Gonzalez, had been sexually assaulted by a bunch of military dudes. The Colonel from whom they got this info was shadily lying about his location, which is... odd. The toxicology report comes back from the lab to confirm the scorpion part of the whole thing. Now, finally, right at the end up the episode, it's time to hit the books and find out what Wesen the murderer is!

They do confirm that, yes, the murderer is a Manticore. They figure out the pattern and determine the next victim, where they find Frankie attacking the head of McCabe Security. They have Frankie call up the Colonel, and yeah, it's totally him doing the murders. He's at the VFW talking to McCabe, and hey look, they're both Manticores! The General killed the first guy, but McCabe killed the couple, since the husband Troy was about to confess. The Colonel did all this for Frankie's revenge, unknown to her. The Colonel was about to die from cancer, and wanted to make it right. Very heavy stuff for a show that's mostly about CGI wolfs re-enacting fairytales!

Rosalee has received a letter from her long-estranged mother, and Monroe encourages her to make contact. The plan is for Rosalee to visit tomorrow night, near the anniversary of her father's death. Monroe will accompany her, ever the good boyfriend. Rosalee's sister will also be there, and the two siblings do not get along. Rosalee is super cautious, nervous to get out og the car even once they arrive. Reasonable, since Rosalee and her sister get into a big fight over dinner. Rosalee hadn't seen her family in so long because she missed her dad's funeral, and she missed the funeral because she was in jail. Sis clearly regrets being a huge turd about it, as Rosalee runs out of the hosue weeping. She calms down eventually and the family makes up. I liked this plot best and wish it had gotten more of the episode's time!

Meanwhile, in... Austria? Austria. Meanwhile, in Austria, Analind seems to be regaining her powers. But also, she seems to be going into labor. Neither seems like a good thing! And that's... pretty much it for her this episode. I just want that baby to be born and ruin everything already! Otherwise, the episode was super rad. Though, as usual, I wish it were more about the side characters like Monroe and Rosalee. Regardless, preview below as usual! Also, please comment and let me know what you think of the recap! Your comments are really helpful to me as I try to improve my work here!
