Grimm - Season 3 Episode 10 - Recap - Eyes of the Beholder
NBC's Grimm is back this week with a new episode, following up on a few plot strings that started last episode. Eponymous monster-hunter Nick Burkhardt (David Giuntoli) generally has to contend with some monster folk (aka Wesen) in his jurisdiction of Portland, and this week, it gets a little more personal. Read on and you'll see what I mean!
Juliette's battered buddy Alicia seems to be feeling much better. Nick spills to Juliette that Alicia is secretly Wesen, but that they should keep Nick's role as a Grimm secret from her, to avoid freaking her out too much. They don't want her running off back to Joe, her loser husband ( boyfriend, maybe?), who is secretly stalking the group. Secrets upon secrets upon secrets! Juliette's secret is the first to come out... but Alicia seems to have no idea what she means. Could she... not know about her own Wesen nature?? Woah. That would be weird. But no, she's just playing coy. When Nick reveals he is a Grimm later, Alicia attempts to run. That's when scumbag Joe shows up, and Nick subdues him. Alicia calms down and reveals her Wesen form to Juliette. It's a very sweet scene between friends. This plot wrapped up much sooner than I'd expected!
New character time! A young man in a puffy vest (hey, I've got one just like that!) is sitting in a diner, flirting with Joy the waitress and doodling. Some tough-looking older dudes leave, and he goes soon after. He sees a few of the tough guys beating the everlovin' snot out of another one of the guys, and shouts. The young dude runs off to his car and drives away, nearly hitting the diner's manager. Nick and Hank show up shortly after the manager calls 911. The cops track the car down via a red light cam, finding a picture of our teen diner patron/witness, with the license plate in full view! Oh no! They visit the home of the car's owner, Tyler Ellis. Tyler turns out to be Hank's cute physical therapist from last episode, who goes by her middle name (Zuri) in regular life. Haha, whoops, what a funny happenstance! Anyway, the kid, Jared, is cute physical therapist's younger brother. Jared runs, but Nick catches him and they bring him in for questioning. Poor kid is scared out of his mind about this gang finding out who/where he is.
Nick gets the call about the victim's girlfriend waking up at the hospital, but she's not interested in talking... Until she Volgas and notices that Nick is a Grimm. Then, she gives up a name, the Seventh Street Savages. This is the first Nick, Hank, or Monroe have ever heard of a Wesen street gang, but Rosalee is clued in a little bit. Drugs, violence, seriously territory issues. Not much different from human gangs, really. Same intimidation techniques, anyhow, as they send someone to menace Joy (they're trying to get to Jared, since they notices the two flirting at the diner). Hank's calling to check up on Zuri when two other gang thugs show up at the apartment for Jared. Zuri's clever enough to get a head start and ditch the thugs, and down at the station, Jared identifies the gang members he saw. Jared and Zuri are put in a safehouse for the duration of the investigation. Then, it turns out the gang is keeping Joy hostage. No phones allowed in the safehouse, but Jared sneaks Hank's phone to call Joy, where he learns of her predicament. She plays along with the gang's instructions very briefly, but then breaks script trying to call for help. Jared runs off half-cocked to attempt a rescue, then Hank discovers the bathroom window escape and the mysterious outgoing call. Zuri recognizes the number so Hank and Nick head out to Joy's house. Jared doesn't ewnd up needing much rescuing, since it turns out he's Wesen also! And so is Zuri! Sure! Why not! Zuri tears out a thug throat, which is gross and weird. Nick and Hank haven't got much choice but to pretend it didn't happen.
I liked this episode a lot. I like Hank's relationship to Zuri, the whole will-they-won't-they stuff. I really super enjoy the conflict between Nick's life as a Grimm and his life as a cop. Juliette got a chance to be a badass, too! What I liked most of all about this episode, though, is that there were no weird scenes in Austria of Analind rubbing blood on her pregnant belly. Check out the preview for the episode below!
