'Godzilla 2' Is Coming for You, With Other Monsters Too
Another day at San Diego Comic Con, another big name sequel announced. Director Gareth Edwards has officially confirmed that Godzilla 2 is in the works. And this time, he'll be bringing some other monsters along with him.
During the panel by Legendary Pictures, Edwards greeted fans with a video message shot in San Francisco, joking that he was overlooking the reconstruction of the city following its destruction in Godzilla, which released in May to stellar box office returns. The success of the first movie, Edwards states, “means we get to make another one. First, we genuinely need a break from all the pressure of doing a major franchise and all the fanboy opinions that go along with that.” However, perhaps in clarifying he was just joking about the "fanboy" remarks, Edwards added, “I’m very much looking forward to directing that film."
However, that's not all that was revealed during the panel.
Legendary Pictures CEO Thomas Tull unveiled concept footage for Godzilla 2, which featured the appearance of three iconic monsters from the Godzilla franchise that will appear in the sequel: Ronan, Mothra and Ghidorah.
In the video, viewers could see only the monsters’ silhouettes, along with retro government footage similar to what was used in the opening credits for the first movie. Of course, this didn't stop fans from getting excited...
“Conflict: Inevitable. Let them fight,” the closing title card read, in the tease to end all teases. Added Tull, “Now we have more monsters to play with and we’re excited about it.” So are we, man. So are we.
While no release date has been made official for Godzilla 2, it's looking like we could end up having ourselves a movie that's thrice the scale of the original, just judging from the monsters themselves. And if that's the case, we can't wait.
