Glee - Season 5 Episode 1 - Recap - Love, Love, Love
Well, it's here. The highly anticipated fifth season of Glee has arrived. The thing on everyone's minds: Can Glee continue without Cory Monteith?
Well, we won't be getting to that just yet. It'll be about two weeks until the Finn tribute episode. Tonight, we set our attention on The Beatles. Recap for Glee: "Love, Love, Love."
The episode opens with Rachel at her Funny Girl audition. She's doing a read-through for guest stars Peter Facinelli and Ioan Gruffudd. They cut the audition short and Rachel leaves the room, only to overhear them say they think she's "too young" and "too green" for this part. Out of nowhere, Rachel starts to sing "Yesterday" and I'm disappointed. I had been hearing how emotional this performance was going to be in the show, what with it being Lea Michele's first performance after Cory's death. The performance itself is rather random and out of place. Knowing what we the viewers know, however, it's emotional. That being said, she sounds as great as always. How the lyrics fit in to the scene? Well, who knows. But it's Glee.
Things are a bit different at Mckinley. Figgins is now the janitor, thanks to Sue, who planted some gay porn in his desk. Becky has done her time and Sue has become the principal.
Mr. Schue is back and he's actually doing his job. He's giving the kids a two week assignment based on The Beatles. Kitty remarks that no one can relate to the Beatles anymore. The rest of the episode will try to prove her wrong.
Kitty and Artie are an item! Sort of. They're keeping it on the down-low. You know. "Like secretly gay conservatives." Tina finds the whole thing repulsive and outs them to the Glee club. And here I thought the new "bitch" character (Erinn Westbrook) was going to do it. Thank to Tina, we get an incredibly drawn out speech from Kitty about why she's telling the world she and Artie are together. I love Artie but I instinctively tried to fast forward. Blaine and the guys attempt to lighten Tina's mood by performing "I Saw Her Standing There." It's a cute performance and kudos to Darren for the head shake. How do they just have access to those platforms?
Back to New York and Santana and Rachel are working in a singing diner. I love those! They're both so skinny. Rachel is shocked when the Funny Girl guys are sitting at a table. She gets the whole diner to sing "Hard Day's Night" to prove that she's a star. No sign of Demi Lovato just yet.
Over in Klaine land, Blaine wants to prove to Kurt that he will never cheat again. Together, they celebrate his willingness to sign an Oprah non-cheating clause by performing in the courtyard with their own Sgt. Pepper. They seal it with a kiss. Blaine wants to do more than kiss. He wants to propose. And he wants every Glee club in town to help him. Flash to the group performing "Help." Hey, finally, a segue that makes sense.
Burt drives Kurt to his not-so-secret proposal and all his friends are there. Mercedes! Santana and Rachel! Apparently they could just walk out of their job and fly to Ohio. Vocal Adrenaline and The Warblers are also present. I'm kind of losing focus because it looks like a Hufflepuff absolutely barfed on Blaine's suit.
Yada yada yada. Kurt says yes!
