Glee - Grilled Cheesus - Gleecap

This episode deals with a theme in a new way. Religion, faith, spirituality, whatever you want to call it. Finn is just discovering his faith, or what he thinks faith is, when he makes a grilled cheese sandwich and sees the face of Jesus in the bread. Remember when Jesus on toast was all the rage? Finn treats his sandwich more like a genie and uses prayer more as his three wishes. Wishing for things like winning football games, touching Rachel's boobs, and becoming quarterback. All of these things come true for Finn and he brings his new found love for the big guy to Glee. In between Puck being a proud Jew and singing some Billy Joel (Only The Good Die Young), most of the kids are all for it.

Kurt isn't. After being rude and distant to his amazing dad Burt, his dad suffers a heart attack and ends up in the hospital in a coma. Kurt is naturally heartbroken at the prospect of potentially losing his father and shuts out his friends. Kurt goes on a pretty level headed rant about how he doesn't believe in God. He makes some good points and I'm kind of surprised there aren't more people in the club understanding why he feels the way he does. It's my opinion that everyone would love to be so confident in their beliefs as the religious are. You can't help how you feel. But Kurt still is one of my least favorite characters and shutting Finn out about Burt for not being family is a good example why.

Sue has a new mission this week. Keep religion out of the school. When she learns the glee club is singing about religion, she wants to go to the school board to stop them. She can't do it without a student complaint so she asks Kurt to help her out. Kurt happily agrees and we learn why Sue is so adamant about this. Growing up, she prayed constantly for her sister and over time realized her prayers were unheard. It's actually very sad.

Rachel helps Finn realize he's been praying for stupid crap all along as she sings Papa Can You Hear Me to Burt. Kurt is angry at his friends for bringing their prayers to the hospital room and asks them to leave. He shows them that he believes in his dad and the love he has for him and performs a heartbreaking rendition of I Wanna Hold Your Hand. Complete with a flashback sequence of his time as a kid growing up with his dad, this entire scene makes me want to cry. Did anyone check out the mini-Kurt in the flashback scenes? Scary.

After feeling guilty over his wishes, Finn talks to Emma about his faith but instead of calming him down, she basically makes him lose his faith completely. He performs Losing My Religion to the rest of the club but I kind of feel like no one is getting the point and are instead annoyed that he dare sing a song like that. Mercedes takes Kurt to her church which couldn't be more stereotypical, and asks her friends to pray for Kurt's dad. Then she sings Bridge Over Troubled Water. Yeah.

All the kids join together to sing What If God Was One Of Us and Kurt has a moment with his dad. After Kurt apologizes and tells him how much he loves him, his dad squeezes his hand. Yay! Save Burt! What did you guys think of tonight? I admit, I almost gagged when Finn ate his Grilled Cheesus. That thing was at room temperature in a locker room!

Funniest Quotes of the Night:

Finn talking to God: I think you kinda owe it to Artie seeing as you screwed him in the leg department.

Principal Figgins: Children should be allowed to express whatever faith they choose.
Sue: At the BET awards but not at a public school.
