Girls - Season 1 Episode 10 - Recap and Review - She Did
In the season 1 finale of HBO's Girls, a small sense of closure brings about a whole bunch of new open doors. "She Did" took place almost entirely at a wedding. Jessa's wedding! That was the surprise of the century, and yet, it made absolutely perfect sense.
Jessa (Jemima Kirke) has been missing for nearly a week, but never fear, she's been texting here and there. Marnie (Allison Williams) and Hannah (Lena Dunham) enlist Adam (Adam Driver) to help Marnie move out. Oddly, things have seemed to cool off since last week's blowout fight. Marnie is more hurt than anything, and Hannah feels guilty. Adam advises Hannah to let go of guilt and all of its useless weight. Moving on is growing up. Adam wants to move in now that Marnie's makeshift adult furniture has been removed. Hannah seems enthused, but we'll see.
Marnie decides to crash at Shoshanna's (Zosia Mamet) apartment, what with Jessa out and about for "a full 24/7." For the first time in a long time, Marnie has no plan, and she's excited about that. Shoshanna seems excited to have her, in her own endearingly obsessive kind of way.
Inevitably, the entire crew is invited to the most important party Jessa will ever throw. The catch is, the occasion is a mystery. Surprise! Jessa sprung a wedding on her friends. The lucky yet surprising groom? Thomas John (guest star Chris O'Dowd). You may remember John as dorky bachelor who pursued a threesome with Marnie and Jessa a few episodes back while Marnie was exploring her wild side. Jessa loathed him, and he ended up loathing her. Eventually, their paths crossed, and they got engaged. He couldn't stop thinking about how, if and when they bumped into one another again, he'd propose. He sought her out and wooed her into a wedding. She fell in love with how differently he lived his life, and found his different brand of intelligence to be an adventure for her. Is this for real? Time will tell.
The ladies each react differently. Shoshanna is burned and frustrated. Plus, she wore white. Marnie is excited and decides to celebrate Jessa. Hannah, of course, overanalyzes and uses the wedding as a means of examining where she is in her own life and relationship with Adam. She shares a moment with Jessa in the bathroom, wondering how she could just spontaneously marry a man. Has Jessa grown up? According to Jessa, yes. Hannah's not even sure about Adam moving in.

Shoshanna doesn't feel like dancing. Ray (Alex Karpovsky) hates dancing. He hasn't stopped thinking about her since "the craccident" at the Bushwick party. He's intrigued by her. He finds her raw and real in all of her quirkiness. He fondly calls her "weird." She agrees to go home with him that night, so long as he steers clear of her emotional way. Shoshanna has found someone who cares that she's a virgin, but in the right way. He wants to be her guide, as he has been in the past. I feel happy for them both.
At the wedding, Marnie runs into Charlie (Christopher Abbott) sans the new girlfriend. Marnie is in a better place with the whole ordeal. She even reads the girlfriend's blog! Charlie comes up with a racy sex scenario for the bathroom, and Marnie plays along. He tugs at her playfully, enticing her to follow him. She politely refuses, claiming it to just be a joke. Charlie laughs it off, too. Was it a joke? Probably not. No, it wasn't. Come on, Charlie! You were so close! This was what Marnie always wanted from Charlie in their relationship. She wanted the spontaneity and the passion. Unfortunately, he doesn't go the whole nine yards and make a real move. Eventually, Marnie flirts with, and ends up kissing, the hilarious minister (guest star Bobby Moynihan of Saturday Night Live). It seems like it's all just in good fun, but Charlie sees them and looks hurt.
Marnie also runs into Elijah (Book of Mormon star Andrew Rannells). She hasn't seen him since their tiff at the Brooklyn party that resulted in her getting slapped. Marnie nailed him with the best line. "I hope you find what you're looking for" and a nice little smile. It hits him hard, and he deserves it. Especially because he also admits to giving Hannah her HPV. They kiss and make up, too. In fact, after hearing about Elijah's horrible living situation where he has to share a bathroom with an entire floor of skanks and scallywags, she invites him to move in, in place of Adam.
Adam is upset. He has fallen in love with Hannah, and she's caught off guard. I understand where both sides are coming from. Adam gave into Hannah, and her desire for a real relationship beyond casual sex. He went all in. On the other hand, Hannah's a girl with a dream of becoming a writer, and relationships can very well deter the dreams of anyone. She asked for it this time, but I remember the first half of the season and how he treated her. Adam storms out. Outside, they have a fight in the street about what they want from life. Again, Hannah is called selfish. She's selfish for being so self-deprecating, especially when Adam sees so much in her. He gets hit by a car. Kind of, at least. He gets side-swiped. He doesn't let Hannah accompany him to the hospital.
Hannah takes the subway, either to get home or to visit Adam. We don't know either way. It doesn't matter, though. She falls asleep, and her purse gets stolen. She wakes up in a foreign place a while later. She yells to a couple of girls partying on a rooftop across the street.
Hoodlum: "Is she wearin' a green belt, or am I tweakin'?"
Hannah is in Coney Island, and it's dawn. She walks on the beach, and eats the leftover cake from the tinfoil she had packed for Adam.
What did you all think of the season finale? Do you support Hannah or Adam or both? Are you happy for Shoshanna, and proud of Ray? Are you liking Marnie's new sense of freedom? Were you surprised by the lack of Jessa at her own wedding?
