'Frozen' Surpasses $1 Billion Worldwide

Disney has a lot to be happy about, where Frozen is concerned. Not only did the film win two Oscars on Sunday night (for Best Animated Feature and Best Original Song), but the animated film has now crossed the $1 billion mark at the box office.

The animated musical is the seventh release from the studio to achieve this milestone, alongside The Avengers, Iron Man 3, Toy Story 3, Alice in Wonderland, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest and its sequel, On Stranger Tides (the films were the second and fourth movies in the Pirates franchise, respectively).

The $1 billion+ total comes from the estimated $388.8 million Frozen has earned domestically and the $611.5 million it has earned internationally in the four month since its November release. This not only makes Frozen the second highest-grossing animated film of all time globally (behind Toy Story 3) and the most profitable, non-sequel animated film in history. This becomes all the more impressive when considering it reached $1 billion before even debuting in Japan, one of the most lucrative international markets.

It was clear Frozen was a juggernaut right out the gate, but I don't think even Disney realized how immensely popular the film would end up being. Congratulations to Disney, and here's to the inevitable sequel.
