Friday Box Office: 'Transformers: Age of Extinction' Tops July 4th
For a second week in a row, it's looking like Transformers: Age of Extinction will rule at the box office. For the Fourth of July, the movie has earned $10.6 million, and it's likely to earn even more before the holiday weekend is through. Its domestic total has now reached $150 million, thanks not only to a strong marketing campaign, but also due to the overall failure of other new films, as nothing was really able to make a dent this week.
For example, the latest Melissa McCarthy comedy has underperformed, despite landing at No. 2 for Friday. Tammy The movie has grossed $6.4 million, which is significantly less than expected. The film, directed by McCarthy's husband, Ben Falcone, and co-written by McCarthy herself, cost $20 million to make and started out slow in its Wednesday opening. However, this could all be a positive before it's all said and done, as the movie is still projected to make back its profit. Pundits are predicting a Wednesday-Sunday total that lands somewhere between $33 million and $35 million.
In family films, newcomer Earth to Echo just barely lost out on Friday to How to Train Your Dragon 2, which landed at No. 3 with $2.8 million, bringing its North American gross to $134 million.
The holiday weekend is still young, so a lot could change. But it would be genuinely surprising if Transformers: Age of Extinction were toppled this week. The film has the potential to end the summer as the biggest hit of the season, if it continues at this pace.
