FremantleMedia is upgrading from American Idol to American Gods.
The production company behind the FOX reality show will adapt Neil Gaiman's renowned fantasy novel as a drama series. FremantleMedia North America has acquired the rights to the book by Neil Gaiman, who is best known as the man behind the iconic Sandman comic, which is being made into a film starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt.
Gaiman will executive produce American Gods with FremantleMedia North America. The 2001 novel has been a worldwide bestseller, in addition to winning Hugo, Nebula and Bram Stoker Awards for Best Novel. The tale of American Gods centers on a war between the traditional gods of biblical and mythological origin, and an ambitious rogues gallery of gods reflecting society’s privileging of money, technology, media, celebrity and drugs. American Gods tells the story of Shadow Moon, "an ex-con who becomes bodyguard and traveling partner to Mr. Wednesday, a conman but in reality one of the older gods, on a cross-country mission to gather his forces in preparation to battle the new deities."
No word on when the series will premiere, or which networks intend to bid for the property, but this is already the most excited I've been about a TV project in some time.
