FOX Picks Up DC Comics Adaptation 'Lucifer'

Gotham doesn't premiere until next week, yet FOX is already thinking about its next foray into the DC Universe: the network has given a "put pilot commitment" to an adaptation of DC Comics property Lucifer. From the Vertigo comics imprint of the company, Lucifer centers on "the Lord of Hell after he grows bored and unhappy with the position, resigns his throne and abandons his kingdom for the gorgeous, shimmering insanity of Los Angeles, where he opens an exclusive piano bar called Lux."

The pilot for the one-hour drama comes from Tom Kapinos, the creator of Showtime's Californication. No start date for production has been announced just yet, but one would think FOX would like to put this in the pipeline as soon as possible, given the sheer volume of DC Comics-related properties expected to hit television within the next year or so, as TNT is working on a live-action adaptation of Teen Titans series and Arrow co-creator Greg Berlanti is developing a reboot of Supergirl. This is without even mentioning the premieres of two other DC Comics TV series next month, as The Flash will debut on The CW while Constantine debuts on NBC.

In short, FOX needs to get on the ball before this whole "comic book characters on TV" craze passes. That is, assuming it actually will pass.
