The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has lost one of its most esteemed and well-loved members.

Tom Sherak, a former actor and film producer who served as Academy president from 2009-2011, has passed away at the age of 68 following a 12-year battle with prostate cancer. Sherak hasn't been in the public eye much since his term as Academy president came to an end, although in September 2013, Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti appointed him director of the Mayor's Entertainment Industry and Production Office, a newly-created position intended to bring entertainment jobs back to the area. It was a job to which Sherak was well-suited, given his success as head of AMPAS.

In tribute to its former president, the Academy released a statement on Sherak's passing:

“To the entertainment community,

With broken hearts we want to share with you the news that Tom Sherak passed away today after a long 12 year battle with prostate cancer. He died at home surrounded by his family giving him hugs, kisses, and love.

Tom is, was, and always will be, our loving husband, daddy, papa, brother, friend, and “Go to Guy.” He blessed this earth for 68 incredible years, and he will be missed every single day.

Tom lived his life as an open book. He opened his heart and let the world in, and anyone who was lucky enough to know him knew first hand the power of his love. He gave everything he had to help others, regardless of whether or not he knew them. Tom is a true hero in our lives who has a star on the sidewalk and wings to fly.

We love him so very much.”

I mostly knew Sherak from the yearly Oscar nominations announcements, but he always came across as a guy with a clear love of film. And for that alone, I reserve a fondness for him. Rest in Peace, Mr. Sherak.
