Florida Georgia Line Break Billboard Record
Florida Georgia Line have broken a huge Billboard record with their smash hit 'Cruise'.
Due in part to their remix with Nelly and last October's chart methodology changes, the song has now spent 22 weeks atop the Hot Country Songs chart, more than any other song in the chart's 70 year history.
At 21 weeks, there had been a multiple-act tie, but Florida Georgia Line surpassed all of them this week to make it into the history books. What's been most revealing for country fans is that the rest of the top 10 acts charting at #1 for the most number of weeks are from the 40s and 50s and are now positively legendary artists and songs. Many fans of the genre who don't believe in the 'countryness' of Florida Georgia Line (including myself) are struggling with this fact in addition to how the chart methodology changes have directly impacted this feat.
However, it's a wake up call that this new style of modern country music is here to stay, and with more and more artists copying the sounds and ideas featured in the hit duo's songs, the future of country music has been called into question. Just where will we be in 10 or 20 years' time?
Made even more impressive is the fact that 'Cruise' was the duo's debut single, from their hitmaking album Here's To The Good Times, which also remains #1 on Top Country Albums. In addition, their second single 'Get Your Shine On', was also very successful and reached #1, and their third single, 'Round Here', is climbing up the top 10 on each of the charts as we speak.
So now, the thing that many country fans are now asking themselves is where will it end? How many more weeks will 'Cruise' top the charts? Will they end up being one of the biggest bands ever to grace country music? And will they influence a whole new generation of performers? Only time will tell.
