FIRST LOOK: The Penguin and Alfred in FOX's 'Gotham'
With each passing week, I find myself wishing it would just be fall already so I can see if Gotham delivers on the hype, since it has the potential to be the most intriguing new series of the 2014. Okay, yeah, it's basically a police procedural, but unlike CSI: Miami, this series is set in a place I actually find interesting -- for a variety of reasons. Among those reasons: well, it's a fictional place, for one; but most importantly, it breeds a twisted, colorful caliber of character, the likes of which you can only get from an adaptation of a comic book property.
Below is our first official look at Robin Lord Taylor as Oswald Cobblepot (a.k.a The Penguin) in FOX's Gotham, along with our first glimpse at Sean Pertwee as Alfred Pennyworth, the lifelong butler/surrogate father of Bruce Wayne (David Mazouz). Both characterizations promise a harder-edge over their big-screen depictions: Cobblepot is described as possessing "the brains of a chess grandmaster and the morals of a jackal," adding that the man is basically "a low-level psychopath who hides his sadistic lust for power behind an exquisitely polite demeanor." Meanwhile, Alfred is “a tough-as-nails ex-marine from East London," which makes him more than fit to do some fighting of his own on the streets of Gotham. Not that I necessarily want or expect him to, but hey, the possibility is out there, I suppose.
