Final Box Office: 'X-Men: Days of Future Past' Brings In $302M Worldwide
With the four-day Memorial Day Weekend at an end, Bryan Singer's X-Men: Days of Future Past sealed its box office dominance, finishing with a fantastic four-day debut of $111 million. Coupled with the $191 million the film brought in from international markets through Monday, the movie finishes its weekend with a massive $302 million, the biggest global debut of any film in the X-Men franchise, surpassing the $203 million worldwide opening of X-Men: The Last Stand. However, in North America, The Last Stand still retains its title as the top X-Men debut with $122 million back in 2006.
But the final blow was landed against Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore's comedy, Blended. While it was able to meet the $18 million projections, the film remains one of Sandler's worst openings in years. Placing at No. 3 with $18.2 million, the lousy performance by Blended was a major factor in box office revenue being down over 26 percent from this same weekend last year.
Also partially responsible for the decline in revenue is Godzilla, which took a major hit in week two, coming in at No. 2, with a four-day gross of $39.4 million and a three-day gross of $31.1 million. This is a 67 percent decline from last weekend's No. 1 debut, although the film has taken in an impressive $323.4 million globally. The blockbuster was also significant for helping Warner Bros. cross the $1 billion mark in foreign box office revenue for the 14th straight year.
The top five was rounded out by Neighbors and The Amazing Spider-Man 2, which brought in $17.2 million and $10 million, respectively, to take the No. 4 and No. 5 positions. Both films have shown impressive staying power, although I can't imagine either film will last in the Top 5 much longer, with the summer movie season beginning to pick up over the next week, with the debuts of movies like Maleficent and Edge of Tomorrow. But I suppose we'll see soon enough.
