Final Box Office: 'Transformers: Age of Extinction' Tops Holiday Weekend

It's official: it's two weekends in a row at the top of the box office charts for Transformers: Age of Extinction. The movie conquered the competition for the Fourth of July holiday weekend with a five-day total of $53.8 million, with $36.4 million coming from the Friday-Sunday stretch. While this is a decline of 63 percent from its opening total last week, the film has now achieved a domestic gross of $174.7 million. And its fortunes have only continued to grow overseas, as the sequel remains a bonafide international hit, taking in $95.8 million from 37 territories and crossing the $400 million mark in less than 12 days. Transformers: Age of Extinction now has an impressive worldwide total of $575.6 million.

This was enough to ward off any potential challengers this week, such as the new Melissa McCarthy comedy, Tammy. The R-rated film disappointed, grossing $32.9 million from Wednesday-Sunday -- a decline over McCarthy's two big films last year, The Heat ($39 million) and Identity Thief ($34.6 million). However, not all of the news is bad. Despite underperforming, Tammy has already made back its relatively modest $20 million budget. Say what you will about overall fatigue with McCarthy's shtick, but not every comedy turns a profit in its first few days of release. Tammy also did solid enough business to not only take the No. 2 spot, but also unseat 22 Jump Street as the nation's top comedy. The latter film fell to No. 4 behind newcomer Deliver Us From Evil, an exorcism-themed horror film starring Eric Bana and Edgar Ramirez. The horror thriller grossed $15 million over the five-day stretch, which is half of its $30 million budget.

Family films are also still alive on the charts, as Earth to Echo (starring The X Factor USA alum Brian "Astro" Bradley) debuted to a five-day total of $13.5 million. While this is a generally underwhelming number, the plus side is that Relativity Media paid only $13 million to acquire this found-footage E.T. from Disney, which filmed it last year before putting it into turnaround. So even while it placed at No. 6 behind How to Train Your Dragon 2, this is still far from the worst news Relativity could have gotten.
