Final Box Office: 'Transformers: Age of Extinction' Is No. 1

To the surprise of absolutely no one, Transformers: Age of Extinction easily conquered all comers at the weekend box office, becoming the first movie this year to debut with $100 million domestically, once all ticket sales were tabulated. Of course, some other film studios are insisting the number is closer to $98 million, but Paramount isn't really trying to hear all that.

The movie, which cost $210 million to make, has already made back its profit in worldwide ticket sales. Overseas, the movie opened to more than $200 million in 37 markets, including a record-breaking $93 million debut in China. Transformers: Age of Extinction is now the top weekend opening of all time in the country, due in large part to a targeted campaign by Paramount to ensure its success by having a significant portion of the movie take place in China.

As for the rest of the box office, 22 Jump Street continued to rake in the dough. The movie brought in $15.4 million in its third weekend, bringing its North American total to $139.8 million, surpassing the lifetime gross of the first movie in the comedy franchise, 21 Jump Street ($138.4 million in 2012).

Meanwhile, How to Train Your Dragon 2 raked in $13.1 million, bringing its domestic gross to $121.8 million, narrowly edging out Think Like a Man Too, which earned $10.4 million for a two-week total of $48.2 million. Rounding out the top 5 is Disney’s Maleficent, which surpassed the $200 million milestone with its $8.2 million gross this weekend. The fairy tale flick is sitting pretty with a North American total of $201.9 million.

The Fault In Our Stars continues to do strong business. Although the teen weeper has dropped to #8, it is well over $100 million in domestic gross, and is likely to earn even more before its run comes to an end. The movie took in $4.8 million to bring its one-month total to $109.5 million. This was enough to surpass X-Men: Days of Future Past, which falls to #9 with $3.3 million. However, X-Men is proving to have real legs, having premiered in May but remaining strong throughout June. The movie has already earned $223.4 million during the course of its run so far.
