Final Box Office: 'Neighbors' Decimates All Comers With History-Making Opening

Remember how I noted that analysts were predicting an opening of roughly $48 million for the Zac Efron/Seth Rogen comedy Neighbors following its stellar Friday opening? Well, turns out the movie exceeded even those lofty expectations.

The R-rated Neighbors opened to a spectacular $51.1 million debut over Mother's Day weekend, making history as the No. 4 three-day opening of all time for an R-rated comedy, falling behind The Hangover: Part II (#1 with $85.9 million), Sex and the City (#2 with $57 million) and Ted (#3 with $54.4 million). The movie, made on a budget of $18 million, easily outpaced last week's No. 1 movie, superhero blockbuster The Amazing Spider-Man 2.

However, while Amazing Spider-Man 2 fell a troubling 59 percent in its second weekend, the film still managed to gross $37.2 million, bringing its domestic total to $147.9 million. Even better, the movie continues to do monster business overseas, earning $69.5 million overseas to bring its foreign total to $403 million, and its global gross to a hefty $550.9 million.

Coming in at No. 3 is The Other Woman, which continues its impressive run, raking in $9.6 million for a solid domestic gross of $61.7 million. In fact, the popularity of The Other Woman may be responsible for the failure of another female-centric comedy, as Christian female comedy Moms' Night Out was a bomb, opening at No. 7 with $4.2 million. It seems, when faced with the choice, audiences preferred to see the raunchier, more mainstream comedy than the smaller, tamer offering. For what it's worth, TriStar had been hoping the film would ride the momentum of other faith-based successes at the box office, but Moms' Night Out was ultimately unable to duplicate the success of the film that has been at the center of the craze for nearly a month now: Heaven Is for Real, which came in at No. 4 in its fourth weekend with $7 million, bringing its domestic total to a wildly successful $75.2 million.

Yet, while Moms' Night Out underperformed, it still did better than the weekend's other new offering, the independent animated comedy Legends of Oz: Dorothy's Return. The animated film came in at No. 8 with $3.7 million, marking one of the all-time worst opening for a film that opened in 2500-3000 locations. Production company Summertime Entertainment is expected to completely lose its ass on this movie. Legends of Oz cost $70 million to make, and unless it's the biggest surprise hit in the history of home video, there's almost no hope Summertime Entertainment will ever see that money made back.
