Final Box Office: 'Maleficent' Easily Takes No. 1 Spot
It was an absolute slaughter at the box office by a sorceress.
After the final box office was tallied, it became clear who won the weekend, and it wasn't even close: Maleficent raked in an impressive $70 million in North America to take the No. 1 spot from last weekend's champ, superhero blockbuster X-Men: Days of Future Past.
The movie, which kicked off Friday to huge numbers which carried over into Saturday's box office, was fueled largely by female audiences of all ages, which makes sense: it's not as if the summer movie lineup is packed with female-friendly offerings. Case in point, Seth MacFarlane's A Million Ways to Die in the West, which didn't do anywhere near as well. The R-rated comedy opened to an underwhelming $17.1 million, a mere fraction of the $54.5 million opening of MacFarlane's last directorial effort, 2012's Ted. The Western comedy placed at No. 3 behind X-Men: Days of Future Past, which took a 64 percent hit in its second weekend, though still bringing in a solid $32.6 million. Its worldwide gross has now reached a daunting $500.2 million, thanks to its $162.1 million North American total and its $338.1 million international haul. By any measure, the mutant blockbuster is a massive success that will likely be the most successful in the X-Men franchise before it's all said and done, if it isn't already.
The Top 5 this weekend was rounded out by two holdovers: Godzilla, which adds $12.3 million to bring its global haul to $374.7 million; and Blended, which continues to disappoint by bringing in a tepid $8.4 million to its total. In other news, Neighbors surpassed $200 million globally, continuing its sensational run. The movie just barely missed out on a Top 5 placement, but the film has already shown remarkable staying power in the midst of other big summer releases.
