Final Box Office: 'Captain America' Tops for Third Weekend in a Row
The final weekend numbers are in, and while Heaven Is For Real was projected to make north of $28 million for the five-day period beginning with Wednesday's nationwide opening, for this weekend, it topped out at $21.5 million. This was good for the No. 3 spot, as the film managed to do significantly better than the Johnny Depp sci-fi thriller Transcendence, which more or less bombed, earning just $11.5 million.
But the big story was the continuing dominance by Captain America: The Winter Soldier. The Marvel movie brought in $26.6 million to make it three weekends in a row at the No. 1 spot, a feat which has become somewhat rare in the current box office climate. However, this year has already had two such instances, between Captain America in April, and The LEGO Movie back in February. Captain America: The Winter Soldier is now nearing $600 million worldwide.

Meanwhile, Rio 2 remains strong, bringing in $22.5 million to take second place. This just narrowly edged out the impressive opening totals for Heaven Is For Real, which rode the Easter holiday to surprising success. In fact, other religious-themed movies landed in the Top 10 when it was all said and done, boosted by the holiday and by wider mainstream appeal. Noah and God's Not Dead finished at No. 9 and No. 10, respectively, with the former earning $5 million and the latter raking in $4.8 million.
As for other newcomers at the box office this weekend, not all could fare as well as Heaven Is For Real. Although it started out the weekend in the Top 10, Disney's latest nature documentary, Bears, finished in No. 11 with $4.7 million. This is the lowest-opening DisneyNature title ever. However, faring a bit better was A Haunted House 2, which raked in $9.1 million to come in fifth place. The comedy sequel did significantly less than the $18 million debut of its predecessor, but it's already succeeded in making back its modest $4 million budget. The same can't be said for Transcendence, which cost $100 million to make, yet brought in just barely above 1/10th of its budget. Warner Bros. is hoping to make up the difference in international markets. But that's a tall order, by any measure.
