All-Female 'Ghostbusters' Officially In Development from 'The Heat' Team
Who you gonna call? Well, director Paul Feig's answer: "hilarious women".
That's what Feig announced in a tweet, confirming that the rumored all-female Ghostbusters reboot is now officially a reality. Feig, director of the hit action buddy comedy The Heat, will reteam with the film's writer, Katie Dippold, to bring Sony's new Ghostbusters movie to the big screen.
This is a considerable change from the original plan for a third Ghostbusters film featuring the original cast. Between endless script rewrites, the departure of original director Ivan Reitman, and the death of star Harold Ramis, it became apparent to Sony that the film would just never make it out of development hell.
Enter Feig, who came on board in August to breathe new life into the project with a fairly novel idea: a reboot of the entire Ghostbusters film franchise, but with women in the lead roles. Naturally, this plays into Feig's strengths as a director whose comedic ideology basically centers around the notion that women are every bit as funny as men, if not more so. And given his success with Bridesmaids, which he directed back in 2011, I'd argue he's right. And bringing Dippold on board to help with the script continues a partnership that already works, as Dippold has just completed the script for The Heat 2.
No cast has been announced yet, although Bill Murray famously went on record with his dream cast: Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Emma Stone and Linda Cardellini. And I'm kind of hoping that casting plays out, although I have a feeling Feig might want to get Sandra Bullock in on this one, given the success they had with The Heat. Either way, I'm interested to see how this all plays out, since this has the potential to be pretty huge.
But what do you think of the Ghostbusters reboot? Who would you want to see in the lead roles? Sound off in the comments!
