Falling Skies - Season 3 Episode 4 - Recap - At All Cost
In the battle that opens this week's episode of TNT's Falling Skies, our rag-tag crew of alien invasion survivors has demonstrably evolved into an army. President Tom Mason (Noah Wyle) brings out last week's human captive (the one who claims to work for the real President) during a large battle and shows her what the Volm (newly-met alien allies of the human resistance) can do in combat. After this nice little audience catch-up session, the captured Lieutenant buys the story about Mason's camp benefiting from their alliance with the Volm. They contact her boss, President Hathaway, and a little field trip is arranged aboard John Pope's vintage plane that he apparently has secretly had this whole time. The President's camp (understandably) loses their cool entirely upon seeing that Tom and co. have brought their Volm buddy along for the ride, but once they hear Tom's story and get a chance to know why the Volm want to help, they're much more (cautiously) optimistic. Tom decides to stay for a few days to work out the details, but their planning is interrupted by a surprise attack, and while Tom's crew is escaping by plane, they get shot down and crash land in a thick forest.
Another thread still dangling from last week is Tom's freaky, possibly alien newborn daughter. To this end, Anne returns to the eccentric scientist from a few weeks ago. Science man devises a way to examine DNA from the formerly-harnessed kids, but Anne secretly also gives him a sample of the weird baby Alexis's DNA. when it turns out to be partly alien (!), Anne smacks the wacky doc upside the head with a wrench (!!), then goes back home to drug Lourdes (!!!) and abscond with the weird baby (!!!!). She's stopped in the night by a skitter, a harnessed kid, and Bad Hal, who assure her (creepily) that everything will be fine.
Ben Mason has a tough decision in this week's episode; he and the other formerly harnessed kids (including his friend Deni) have the opportunity to get rid of his alien spikes and return to a normal life. Ben and Deni debate the pros (super strength, alien translation, general usefulness) and the cons (possibly shortened lifespan, unknown side effects, glowy back parts). The two ultimately decide not to have the spikes removed, with Deni snapping her now-unnecessary glasses in half. After this, though, the pair are seen stargazing with glasses on (Deni's with tape on the bridge), so we're not clued in to whether they actually had the procedure done or not.
Hal's mad life stays mad and gets madder. He's advanced from sleepwalk meetings with the alien-possessed Karen to full-on Green Goblin mirror dialogues. He dramatically punches the evil mirror alter ego, but naturally, this just means that the bad version gets to be in the driver's seat for a while. So then Bad Hal meets up with Maggie (who does not notice that Hal is not quite himself) and the two get premium cable on one another in the bedroom.
There was a lot of movement for the Presidents plot this week, but I'm more interested in what's happening with Tom's kids, especially Hal and weird baby Alexis. We now know for sure that Alexis has some alien DNA, and that Hal is under bad guy control, so I'm expecting next week to focus on that, but the preview seems to indicate we'll mainly be following Mason, Pope, and the plane crash crew as they struggle to survive their forested journey home. Regardless, I'm way excited to see what happens now that Bad Hal has caught Anne and Alexis, so I'm willing to wait a bit to find out. Check back right here next week for another recap, and watch a promo for this week's episode below!
