Equestrian - Team Show Jumping Finals - London 2012 Olympics - Results

Today was the third and final day of the Team Show Jumping event at the London 2012 Olympics. Today's final featured a Saudi Prince, a lot of pretty horses and a jump off to determine the gold medal.

The Team Show Jumping final is similar to the jumping event in Eventing, but features taller, wider and trickier jumps. Riders incur penalty points for knocking down rails or going over the time limit. Each team has four riders and only the three best scores count. The team with the lowest total wins.

His Royal Highness Prince Abdullah Al Saud turned in a fantastic ride for Saudi Arabia, with only 4 penalty points, which helped his team capture the bronze medal. The story of the event however, was the race for the gold medal between Team GB and the Netherlands.

After three days of competition and over two hours of competing in the final alone, the whole thing came down to one final rider for the Netherlands. If he could clear (complete the course with no knocked down fences or time penalties), the Netherlands would win. Knock down one fence and it would go to a jump off. Two or more and Team GB would have the gold.

As you might have guessed, the final rider knocked down one fence and incurred no time penalty, sending the match to a team jump off to determine gold and silver. In the jump off, all four riders for each team would go, with the three lowest score for each time counting. In the event of another tie, the team with the fastest time would win.

Jump Off:

Rider 1: Both teams clear!

Rider 2: Brits clear! Netherlands 8 pts

Rider 3: Brits 4 pts Netherlands 4pts

Rider 4: Brits clear!

Since they drop the lowest score, the final rider for the Netherlands would not matter and Team GB was assured the gold! A very exciting finish. The crowd went ballistic and the announcer cried! Team GB has really been on a roll of late. Also an impressive performance from the Dutch.
