Emma Watson Named U.N. Women Goodwill Ambassador
Today, J.K. Rowling released a short story updating us on what Harry, Ron, and Hermione have been up to in the years since the Harry Potter saga concluded. But we don't need a work of fiction to tell us what Hermione's actress has been up to. Apparently, the woman who brought Ms. Granger to life on the big screen is getting into the political side of things.
Emma Watson has been named a United Nations Goodwill Ambassador. More specifically, she has been appointed to the U.N. Women branch, which is devoted to gender equality. Watson is the first appointment under new U.N. Women's executive director Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka. Watson's primary role in the position will be to work with the U.N. Women’s HeForShe campaign, which is focused on empowering women in the worldwide fight against gender inequality.
"We are thrilled and honored to work with Emma, whom we believe embodies the values of U.N. Women," said Mlambo-Ngcuka in a statement.
"Women’s rights are something so inextricably linked with who I am, so deeply personal and rooted in my life that I can’t imagine an opportunity more exciting," said Watson, in a statement of her own. "I still have so much to learn, but as I progress I hope to bring more of my individual knowledge, experience and awareness to this role."
Given she's a recent Brown graduate, I think Watson is a fine fit for the job, and is certainly high profile enough to bring positive attention to the cause.
