Eddie Murphy to return in new 'Beverly Hills Cop' film
Looks like we'll be seeing the big screen return of Axel Foley sooner rather than later.
Eddie Murphy and Paramount have decided to capitalize on the buzz surrounding the failed TV continuation of the Beverly Hills Cop franchise by kickstarting a new big screen installment.
The TV series, from producer Shawn Ryan and featuring Brandon T. Jackson ("Tropic Thunder") as Foley's cop son, would have featured Murphy popping up from time to time in a supporting role. However, after CBS surprisingly decided to pass on the series, Paramount decided to take another approach to resurrecting the successful franchise.
Paramount discussed continuing the franchise with Murphy, who has signed on to reprise his role as wise-cracking cop Axel Foley in the new film. It's unknown if Jackson or any of Murphy's original co-stars, such as Judge Reinhold and John Ashton, will appear in the new film.
Though no director has been chosen, the script is currently being written by Josh Appelbaum and Andre Nemec (Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol and the upcoming Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles reboot).
The series grossed over $700 million worldwide, with the last installment being the largely-panned Beverly Hills Cop 3 in 1994.
