Dracula - Episode 5 - Recap - The Devil's Waltz

NBC's Dracula is also back after a week's break, turning Black Friday red with blood. This episode gets a bit gruesome and violent for my tastes, so be careful not to barf up your leftovers. A lot of subtlety and intrigue this week, too! I guess they felt they had to strike a balance.

Dracula's butler pal is still captured and the Order of Dracul (well, presumably) is torturing his biz directly. It's very unpleasant to watch. There's blood and screaming and knives under fingernails. Waugh, I hate torture scenes! They're trying to find out who Grayson/Dracula loves I guess so they can go torture her instead. He's not talking, good on him! It's fine though, because Dracula show up to save him and seriously dismembered some dudes in a very graphic way. Renfield is fine now! Well, he's probably still super hurt. But nobody is torturing him anymore. So that's good.

Dracula show up in Mina's bedroom to reveal his feelings, which Mina doesn't seem to find creepy at all for some reason. They kiss and head towards Pound Town, but then oops it's just a dream she's having! Why anyone would have a sex dream about that creepy weirdo, I shall never know. Anyway, the planning for her engagement party seems to be going just fine. Drac meets some dudes and figures out with his superpowers that these dudes probably kidnapped Renfield. His sometimes playmate Lady Weatherby seems genuinely surprised, so maybe it wasn't the Order after all! Harker makes his speech about how cool it is to be engaged and blah blah blah, then grants the first dance with Mina to Grayson! Now this is the part in the preview where Drac turns around shocked to see Jonathan getting a fresh opening in his throat, but oops that was just him fantasizing about doing that to Harker actually. Everyone totally can tell that Mina and Drac want to bone though!

Van Helsing's science formula for daywalking could make advances with Dracula revealing a lady dracula prisoner for testing. In order for the injected medicine to work at all, they must shock her heart until it beats again. It does work, though temporarily. This plot is kinda... staying the same every week? Blah.

The best plot of the week is When Dracula keeps flashing back to how he and Renfield met. Renfield showed up during a sour business deal to advise Dracula, so Dracula saved his life when the other guys decided to hit Renfield with sticks and limbs. Dracula shows a soft side, which (though I don't care for such a reinterpretation) makes him much more likable.

well, maybe I was a bit hard on this show at first. The characters seem to make more sense now than they did before, and there's less random weird imagery in among the normal things happening. It's still a really goofy show that can't tell and thinks it's a very serious drama, but that's almost charming in a way. I still haven't heard if there'll be another season or not, but with the money NBC has invested in it, I wouldn't doubt it. Anyway, here's a video preview!
