Dolly Parton Week - Song Suggestions - American Idol
It's not just country week -- it's Dolly Parton week! Songs from the Dolly Parton song collection! Woohoo!
I must admit that I did not grow up on Dolly Parton's music -- I just knew her as the country singer with humungous McTatas people would crack jokes about. But while researching her music for this post, I have to say, I absolutely love her. I just want to snuggle up to her because she's just so awesome! I'm happy she's going to be on American Idol -- this will do wonders for the sales of her newest album: Backwoods Barbie
And so the question remains: What will our American Idol karaoke stars sing on Tuesday? Everyone has been talking about this for days now. Richie gave me a short list of some Dolly Parton hits, and I also went to iTunes for some clips and here are some potential hits we'll hear this week:
1. I Will Always Love You (or Sing At Your Own Risk)
A Dolly Parton original, made into a huge hit by Whitney Houston from the soundtrack of "Bodyguard". Who got this song? I'm hoping that David Archuleta managed to grab this from the girls, but this might go to Syesha Mercado, Carly Smithson or Ramiele Malubay.
2. Jolene
Probably the only choice for David Cook who can predictably cover the cover of White Stripes and ultimately be called original by Randy Jackson. Carly Smithson, Jason Castro and Michael Johns might also get this, and they should do a good job as well.
3. 9 to 5
From the film "9 to 5" starring Jane Fonda, Lily Tomlin and Dolly Parton. The only ones I can see puling this one off are David Archuleta and Kristy Lee Cook, if they so dare.
4. Islands in the Stream
A duet by Dolly Parton and Kenny Rogers. This would be a safe and perfect song for David Archuleta.
5. Coat of Many Colors
One of my favorite Dolly Parton songs since -- two hours ago -- this will be fought over by Brooke White and Jason Castro. I think this will be the hit of the night, unless David Cook gets "Jolene" and gets pimped by the judges. "Coat of Many Colors" is just an awesome song. Jason Castro should get this, so he can get back into serious contention!
6. Drives Me Crazy
By the Fine Young Cannibals, covered by Dolly Parton in her new album. Is it just Dolly Parton-written songs or any single that she has done? At any rate, if this was a legal choice then Michael Johns or David Cook will have another safety net song to choose from.
7. Here You Come Again
Another awesome Dolly Parton song. This should be good for David Archuleta, Jason Castro or Carly Smithson should she be inclined to tackle a lighter song this week.
8. Love is Like a Butterfly
Only Jason Castro will be able to pull this off methinks.
9. Travelin Thru
From the film "Transamerica". Brooke White, Kristy Lee Cook or David Archuleta can sing this.
10. Romeo
C'mon Carly Smithson, sing this!
11. Two Doors Down
This is a fun song. David Archuleta should do a good job with this.
12. Why'd You Come Here Looking Like That
Kristy Lee Cook?
Okay, I can't go through every song, but what do you guys think? The Dolly Parton collection is immense. I think it's going to be one of the best shows this season. I see some big failures and big hits.
David Archuleta + Dolly Parton = Perfect!
