'Doctor Who' star Karen Gillan Cast as Lead in 'Selfie'

Doctor Who star Karen Gillan is leaving sci-fi behind for a role in a social media comedy.

Gillan has been cast as the lead in the single-camera, ABC comedy pilot Selfie from Suburgatory creator/executive producer Emily Kapnek. The series centers on Eliza Dooley (Gillan), "a self-obsessed, twentysomething who is more concerned with 'likes' than being liked. After suffering a very public and humiliating breakup, she becomes the subject of a viral video and suddenly has more social media 'followers' than she ever imagined — but for all the wrong reasons. She enlists the help of a marketing expert at her company to help repair her tarnished image."

Gillan, best known for her role as Amy Pond on Doctor Who, can be seen on the big screen this summer in Marvel's Guardians Of The Galaxy. As a huge fan of Gillan's work, this is pretty much my favorite casting news this week. I can't wait to see how her comedic chops translate to a more American brand of comedy.
