'Divorce Court' To Continue Helping Love Die Through 2017

Divorce Court, the daytime court show that deals with all the nasty underpinnings of love in freefall, has been officially renewed.

In fact, not only has the show been renewed, it's guaranteed to continue airing through 2017. Apparently, the renewal is something of a no-brainer, since it's confoundingly popular among viewers in syndication. This year, the show hit a seven-year high of 3 million viewers per episode, which is actually pretty damn impressive.

“In the current landscape where many shows have declining ratings, we are thrilled to have a long-running program on an opposite trajectory,” said Stephen Brown, EVP of development and programming of the FOX Television Stations. “Renewing the series was an easy decision to make.”

Although this iteration of the show is in its 15th season, the actual concept (of the show, not of divorce itself) dates back to the 1950s, with actors reenacting actual divorce proceedings, since the truth is often sillier, and far more entertaining than fiction. And also because I assume the 50s needed a contrast to other successful marriage shows like I Love Lucy and The Honeymooners, where threats of physical abuse were a weekly thing.

While Divorce Court has been renewed for three extra seasons, there's been no word on the renewal of divorce itself. But one presumes it'll continue, being as constant as death, taxes, and Keith Richards.
