Disney Greenlights 'Teen Beach Movie 2'
One of Disney Channel's more popular original movies in some time has been Teen Beach Movie, with Ross Lynch, Grace Phipps, Garrett Clayton, John DeLuca, and The Fosters' Maia Mitchell. Was it goofy? Sure, but so were the Beach Blanket movies to which this was an homage. And those movies got plenty of sequels and spinoffs, so it's kind of fitting that Teen Beach Movie is getting a sequel of its own.
Lynch, Mitchell, DeLuca, Phipps and Clayton (who joined Mitchell on The Fosters at midseason) will all return for Teen Beach Movie 2, which has a premiere date of sometime in 2015. The first film, about "two surfing teen lovebirds who get transported into a 1960s beach flick," was the second-most viewed movie in cable history in total viewers, and produced a soundtrack that climbed to #1 on the Billboard soundtrack charts. The sequel will continue where the first film's closing teaser left off, as modern day teens Mack and Brady get a visit from characters in the beach party film to which they were transported. It's essentially an inversion of the first film, with Lela, Tanner, Butchy, and other surfers from Wet Side Story being transported to Mack and Brady's world, and to hell with explaining why.
Filming starts this July with returning director/choreographer Jeffrey Hornaday, and a script by the first film's writers Robert Horn (Designing Women), Dan Berendson (Hannah Montana The Movie, Wizards of Waverly Place), and Matt and Billy Eddy (Zapped). No word on a premiere date in 2015 just yet, but here's hoping Disney can find a way to get Pentatonix on the soundtrack to this one too.
