Directors Guild of America Awards for 2013 - Full Nominations
The Directors Guild of America has selected its nominees for film in 2013, and it's a group of finalists that are likely to repeat when Academy Award nominations are announced next Thursday.
The nominees are below via E! Online:
Credit: DGA
Alfonso Cuaron, Gravity
Steve McQueen, 12 Years a Slave
Paul Greengrass, Captain Phillips
David O. Russell, American Hustle
Martin Scorsese, The Wolf of Wall Street
Of the five, I could only see Scorsese missing with Oscar, surprisingly enough. The other four have been too deeply entrenched in awards season to be shaken at this stage. This is not to say that a surprise can't happen, but it's extremely rare for DGA nominations to match 5/5 with Oscar. Regardless, it should be interesting to see how these match up with the Academy next Thursday morning. As it stands now, it's pretty much a two-horse race between Cuaron and McQueen, with Cuaron out in front by a slim margin that McQueen is gradually shortening. If McQueen were to win the DGA, he'd be the first black director to do so. John Singleton (1991's Boyz in the Hood) Lee Daniels (2009's Precious: Based on the Novel 'Push' By Sapphire) are the only other black nominees in the 66-year history of the DGA awards.
Winners will be announced when Jane Lynch hosts the 2014 DGA Awards at the Hyatt Regency Century Plaza in L.A. on Jan. 25.
