Dexter - Season 7 - Episode 5 - Recap - Swim Deep
Dexter finally bests Isaak Sirko, but for how long? LaGuerta continues to be an annoyance who could bit the bullet at any time, while it's obvious that Quinn has bitten off more than he can chew by the end of the episode.
The full recap of Dexter season 7 episode 5: "Swim Deep":
The episode takes off while Dex is cleaning up his boat; he comes upon some blood. Upon investigating further, he quickly realized that someone was killed on the boat. After testing the blood, he is shocked to find out that Louis is dead. I expected a bit of a macabre twinge of happiness, since Louis seems to cause nothing but trouble while alive.
Masuka tells Deb that he's worried for his job, as LaGuerta has been privately processing evidence at another lab. When Deb confronts LaGuerta, she immediately spills her suspicions that the Bay Harbor Butcher might still be alive. Deb agrees with her as much as possible and shares that she also suspected it wasn't Doakes, obviously just to get on LaGuerta's good side. LaGuerta shares a file she has collected with names of people that fit the typical Bay Harbor Butcher code, after which Deb freaks out in the elevator and screams "fuck nugget". Deb shows Dex the file and he points out which of the group were his victims, one of which has family located in the Miami area. Deb promises to make sure she goes to interview the family rather than LaGuerta.

When Dexter is about to enter his apartment, he notices the curtains drawn. Isaak is waiting in there with some creepy tools all laid out! Dex is too smart for such an easy trap, so he calls his apartment phone pretending to be a friend. Can we have a whole episode soon of just Michael C. Hall doing ridiculously silly accents because I adore it? Thinking Dexter is out meeting this "friend" at a restaurant, Isaak heads there to check it out and gets a call from Dexter. Isaak interrogates Dexter about killing Victor and reveals his suspicions about the whole Miami Metro force being involved in a conspiracy killing. Dexter says he works solo, naturally, and abruptly leaves. After the faux-encounter, Dexter meets with Deb in the parking garage and tells her they both need to lay low for awhile since Isaak is after them. He accidentally drops a big nugget: he knows that Victor was Mike's killer because he found his fingerprints in the vehicle and withheld the evidence. Deb freaks out since Dex has previously told her that he kills being that "slip through the cracks" of the legal system. Still, no matter how much she might hate it, she agrees to stay with him in a crappy motel for the night.
After spying on Isaak for a little and quickly realizing that he's a boss and not a hitman, Dexter is called in to sit with Hannah. Batista and Dex talk with her a little so she can identify souvenirs from the crime scenes she shared with Randall. Curiously, Dex notices that Hannah's stories don't quite match up to the signals he is picking up on; one object in particular (a giraffe) he notices she is "nostalgic" about instead of seeming scared.
In the seedy motel later that night, Dex does some research on Isaak and the Koshkas and it doesn't take him long to figure out they have quite a feud with the Columbians. He hatches a scheme right then and there that he refuses to share with Debra, even as she reminisces about a trip they had together to Myrtle Beach and how watchful and protective he had been of her. The next day, Deb is headed to interview the family of the man Dexter had killed when LaGuerta randomly (and annoyingly) decides to stop by. To my surprise, Simon from The Inbetweeners answers the door, looking as quirky-cute as ever. For the uninitiated, I'm talking about the adorable Bubba Lewis. He basically tells the two women that he has never been happier since his father disappeared, as the man always beat on him and his mother. He pulls out some photos from the wedding reception where his dad was last seen; it takes only moments before Debra finds Dexter in one of the photos. She quickly covers up by suggesting that they take the evidence back to the station and thoroughly look through it later. For once, it is Deb that saves Dexter.
Meanwhile, Dexter is at the scene of a new dig where they unearth two bodies; one man and one woman. As he is analyzing the blood spatter on both corpses, he deduces that the woman was killed by someone much smaller than Randall: Hannah. He doesn't share the thought out loud, but confronts Hannah about it as soon as the two of them are alone. He knows she has been lying this whole time and the scar on her hand is from killing the woman. Despite what he finds out about her, she has immunity from jail in any case due to her cooperation. As soon as she leaves, Dexter notices Isaak on his trail - just as he's planned. He leads Isaak to a bar owned by the Columbians. Dex slips out through the back and takes off, leaving Isaak to be killed by the group of Columbians inside, all armed. As soon as he gets back to the station, Miami Metro is called in for homicide reported at the Columbian bar. To Dexter's surprise, instead of finding Isaak's body, all four armed men inside are all dead. Isaak may have sustained a few injuries himself during the encounter, but for the most part, he went totally Terminator on their asses. Dexter finds some blood on the ground that's from Isaak, and he hopes to at least be able to pin him to the case so they can make an arrest.
Quinn comes in to see Nadia as Isaak is being patched up in his office. George tells Isaak that they always used to pay off Quinn by simply leaving money in his car and he would always turn the other cheek. As soon as Quinn gets back into his car, he finds a brown bag of money left on the passenger seat. What are they paying him off for? I just knew that seeing this Nadia chick was going to lead to trouble. Is Quinn going to make it through this season alive?
After solidly proving the blood left at the crime scene belongs to Isaak, he is brought into the station. For the second time after the Trinity Killer, the Big Bad of the season is only a few feet away from Dexter's office, his safe haven. Batista talks to Debra in private, sharing with her his suspicious about Mike's killer. He thinks a cover up is going on, but after he shares his theories with her, she firmly closes the whole thing by telling him that Mike's killer is dead and that's that.
Dexter visits Isaak in prison, in the orange jumpsuit and all. When Dexter asks him if everything is over and they can put this behind them, he relates a story about his grandfather. He waited years and years to get revenge on his father's killer, and he hints that he will do the same to Dexter once he is freed. Still, Dexter warns him that if Isaak ever finds out who Dexter really is, then he's "going to regret it."
Debra gives Dexter the photo she was able to steal from the collection, and he seems happy that she saved him. She tells him that she has made a decision about "things"… she doesn't want to be a part his life that involves the killing of people. She doesn't want to know about it. She will continue to cover for him, but she can't be a part of the "stealing and the lying." She also asks if he found anything out about the bodies from the dig, but he lies and says there is nothing she needs to know. Dexter burns the photo, realizing he is going to have to face things from here on out all by himself.
I loved this episode, and I can't wait to see where things go with Hannah. Is LaGuerta going to drop things so easily? I don't think so. New episodes of Dexter are on every Sunday at 9 on SHOWTIME.
